Well, folks, gather around because today was a day for the history books! And possibly a day for the veterinarian, the groundskeeper, and the local authorities to have a long meeting.
It all started this morning when I, Lucy, a very sophisticated tan-and-white Shih Tzu with a nose for adventure and a strong opinion about snack distribution, discovered that the Animal Kingdom was holding its very own World Series of Baseball!
Now, I know what you're thinking. Lucy, how on earth did you get involved in a major sporting event?
Simple. I heard the words baseball, hot dogs, and unlimited snacks.
I was already halfway out the door before Dad finished his coffee.
đļ The Team Assembles
Our team consisted of yours truly as team captain, Peanut the gray tiger cat as our star slugger, Kiwi the green cheek conure as our play-by-play announcer, and the Quackers twins as our pitching and catching duo.
Gracie, our black-and-white Shih Tzu friend, arrived wearing a baseball jersey two sizes too big and carrying a bag of sunflower seeds.
Then, just as we were discussing our batting order, a cold breeze swept across the yard.
Whoooooooosh!
Out floated the Ghost of Maybelline, our beloved brownish pit bull ghost, wearing a transparent baseball cap and carrying a glowing baseball bat.
"BOOOOOOO!" she howled.
Kiwi nearly fell off his perch.
"GOOD GRIEF! CAN WE GET A WARNING BEFORE THE STADIUM SPECIAL EFFECTS START?"
Maybelline grinned. "Sorry, Kiwi. I was going for a dramatic entrance."
Peanut examined her clipboard. "Well, you're late for practice."
"I'm a ghost," Maybelline replied. "I don't have a watch."
Peanut sighed. "This is going to be a long day."
And she was absolutely right.
đĻĢ Meet the Montana Beaver Bombers!
Our opponents were the mighty Montana Beaver Bombers, a fearsome crew of beavers who had traveled all the way from Montana to compete for the Animal World Series championship.
They arrived in a convoy of tiny wagons loaded with baseball bats, lumber, and enough wood chips to build a small apartment complex.
Their captain, a massive beaver named Buck, stepped onto the field and announced, "We've come all this way to win the championship!"
One of his teammates immediately began chewing on second base.
Buck turned around. "BILL! THAT'S NOT A TREE!"
Bill stopped chewing, looked at the base, and shrugged.
"Well, it looked wooden."
Kiwi flew over to the announcer's booth.
"LADIES AND GENTLECRITTERS! WELCOME TO THE WORLD SERIES! TODAY'S GAME FEATURES THE HOME TEAM, THE WEST VIRGINIA WILD PAWS, AGAINST THE MONTANA BEAVER BOMBERS! THE ODDSMAKERS FAVOR THE BEAVERS BECAUSE THEY HAVE EXPERIENCE BUILDING THINGS UNDER PRESSURE!"
Peanut whispered, "I thought the odds favored us."
Kiwi replied, "They did until I saw the size of their teeth."
⚾ The First Inning: A Quacking Disaster
The game began with Quacker Number One on the mound.
He wound up, flapped both wings, and threw the ball.
Unfortunately, he also threw his hat.
The hat landed on the batter's head.
The batter was so confused that he dropped his bat, sat down, and demanded to speak to the umpire.
The umpire was a very serious-looking owl.
"STRIKE ONE!" the owl hooted.
"But I didn't swing!" protested the beaver.
"Strike two for arguing!"
"That's not fair!"
"STRIKE THREE!"
The owl pointed toward the dugout.
Kiwi nearly fell out of the announcer's booth laughing.
"AND THAT'S OUR FIRST OUT! THE BEAVERS HAVE BEEN DEFEATED BY THE MOST DANGEROUS WEAPON IN BASEBALL: QUESTIONABLE UMPIRE LOGIC!"
Meanwhile, Quacker Number Two was celebrating by waddling in circles around home plate.
We hadn't even made it through the first inning, and already our team was a complete circus.
Naturally, I was proud.
đą Peanut's Big Moment
By the third inning, the Beavers were leading 3–1.
Our manager, who happened to be me, called a team meeting.
"Okay, everyone. We need a strategy."
Peanut raised her paw.
"Simple. We hit the ball, run around the bases, and don't eat the equipment."
Everyone looked at the Quackers twins.
They suddenly became very interested in a patch of grass.
Peanut stepped up to the plate.
Buck wound up and threw a fastball.
Peanut narrowed her eyes.
The ball came screaming toward home plate.
CRACK!
Peanut hit that ball so hard it sailed over center field, over the outfield fence, over the parking lot, and landed in a Montana Beaver Bombers merchandise tent.
The ball knocked over a display of miniature wooden bats.
A beaver selling souvenirs stared at the wreckage.
"Well," he muttered, "at least the bats are selling."
Peanut trotted around the bases with her tail held high.
"HOME RUN!" Kiwi screamed. "PEANUT HAS JUST SENT THAT BASEBALL INTO A DIFFERENT ZIP CODE!"
The score was now 3–2.
Peanut returned to the dugout and calmly began washing her paws.
I asked, "Aren't you excited?"
She replied, "Of course. But excitement is no excuse for poor hygiene."
I swear that cat was born eighty years old.
đģ Maybelline's Ghostly Home-Field Advantage
By the sixth inning, the Beavers had extended their lead to 5–2.
Things were looking grim.
Gracie was pacing in the dugout. The Quackers twins were arguing over who got to keep the game ball. Kiwi was threatening to resign as announcer and become a professional popcorn critic.
Then Maybelline floated toward the pitcher's mound.
"Don't worry, kids," she said. "I've got a plan."
She drifted directly through the Beavers' dugout wall.
A moment later, she emerged wearing Buck's baseball cap.
Buck stared at her.
"HEY! GIVE THAT BACK!"
Maybelline grinned and floated straight through him.
Buck spun around three times, dropped his glove, and shouted, "THEY'VE GOT A GHOST! WHY DIDN'T ANYONE TELL US THE HOME TEAM HAD A GHOST?"
Kiwi grabbed the microphone.
"BREAKING NEWS! MONTANA HAS DISCOVERED THAT WEST VIRGINIA HAS A SECRET WEAPON! SHE DOESN'T NEED A TICKET, SHE DOESN'T NEED A BATHROOM BREAK, AND SHE CAN PASS THROUGH THE WALLS OF THE VISITING LOCKER ROOM!"
The owl umpire blew his whistle.
"INTERFERENCE!"
Maybelline floated back to the dugout.
"What? I didn't touch anybody!"
The umpire consulted the rulebook.
After a long discussion, he ruled that ghosts were technically allowed on the field, provided they did not possess the baseball or scare the concession stand employees.
Maybelline looked disappointed.
"I was really hoping to possess the nacho machine."
đĻ The Quackers Twins Pull Off a Miracle
The bottom of the eighth inning arrived, and we were trailing 5–4.
There were two outs, and the Quackers twins were up to bat.
Now, if you've ever watched two identical ducks try to do anything together, you know the phrase organized chaos doesn't even begin to cover it.
Quacker Number One stepped up to the plate.
He swung.
Missed.
"STRIKE ONE!"
He swung again.
Missed.
"STRIKE TWO!"
The Montana pitcher smirked.
Quacker Number One leaned toward his twin.
"Remember the secret plan?"
Quacker Number Two nodded.
They switched places.
The pitcher threw the ball.
Quacker Number Two swung with all his might.
BONK!
The ball bounced off his helmet, shot straight into the air, and landed in the pitcher's glove.
The pitcher laughed.
Then he realized the ball was stuck inside the duck's helmet.
The owl umpire called, "DEAD BALL!"
While the Beavers argued with the umpire, the twins waddled around the bases.
"WAIT A MINUTE!" Buck shouted. "THEY CAN'T DO THAT!"
Peanut checked the rulebook.
"Actually, they can. The ball was dead, but nobody said the ducks were."
The umpire thought about this for a moment.
Then he shrugged.
"SAFE!"
The twins tied the game 5–5.
Kiwi was practically vibrating with excitement.
"THE QUACKERS HAVE DONE IT! THEY HAVE DISCOVERED A BRAND-NEW BASEBALL STRATEGY! CONFUSE EVERYONE UNTIL THEY GIVE YOU A RUN!"
Gracie was jumping up and down.
I was barking so loudly that three squirrels in the next county filed a noise complaint.
đž The Bottom of the Ninth: Lucy Saves the Day!
And now we arrive at the bottom of the ninth inning.
The score was tied 5–5.
Two outs.
Peanut was on second base.
Gracie was on first.
And I, Lucy, was stepping up to the plate.
The entire stadium went silent.
Even the Beavers stopped chewing on things.
Buck looked at his pitcher and said, "Just throw a slow one. She's a little dog."
I heard him.
I am a little dog.
But I am also a Shih Tzu with championship aspirations and a very serious appetite.
The pitcher wound up.
He threw the ball.
I swung.
CRACK!
The ball shot straight down the third-base line.
I took off running.
My little legs were moving so fast that my ears were flapping like helicopter blades.
First base!
Second base!
Peanut rounded third!
Gracie was right behind her!
The Beavers scrambled after the ball, but their outfielder accidentally threw it into the wood-chip pile they had brought for emergencies.
Three beavers immediately dove in after it.
One came out holding a baseball bat.
Another came out holding a sandwich.
The third came out holding a confused-looking squirrel.
"WHERE'S THE BALL?" Buck screamed.
Nobody knew.
Meanwhile, Peanut crossed home plate.
Gracie crossed home plate.
And I came charging around third base with the determination of a dog who had just heard the treat jar open.
The catcher stood waiting.
I slid.
Well, technically, I tripped over my own paws, rolled across home plate, and landed in a cloud of dust.
But the umpire raised both arms.
"SAFE! GAME OVER! WEST VIRGINIA WINS!"
THE WEST VIRGINIA WILD PAWS HAD WON THE ANIMAL WORLD SERIES!
Final score: West Virginia Wild Paws 6, Montana Beaver Bombers 5.
đ The Championship Celebration
Pandemonium broke out.
The Quackers twins were flapping their wings so hard that the championship banner blew off the scoreboard.
Kiwi flew around the stadium yelling, "WE'RE NUMBER ONE! WE'RE NUMBER ONE! SOMEBODY GET ME A PRESS CONFERENCE AND A BAG OF CHIPS!"
Peanut accepted the championship trophy, inspected it carefully, and announced that it would make an excellent place to nap.
Gracie was busy taking selfies with the trophy.
Maybelline floated through the celebration, making ghostly paw prints in the confetti.
And I, Lucy, was presented with the World Series MVP award.
The trophy was almost as big as I was.
I stood proudly beside it until I noticed the snack table.
There were hot dogs.
There were hamburgers.
There were biscuits.
There was even a giant bowl of popcorn.
I looked at the trophy.
Then I looked at the food.
Then I looked back at the trophy.
"Somebody hold this," I announced. "I've got more important business to attend to."
Peanut shook her head.
"Captain, you can't abandon your trophy."
"I can if there's a hot dog involved."
The Montana Beavers were surprisingly gracious in defeat. Buck shook my paw and congratulated us.
"Well played, Lucy. You earned that win."
Then he leaned closer and whispered, "Do you think we could borrow your ghost for next season?"
Maybelline grinned.
"Only if you have a really good snack budget."
Buck nodded solemnly.
"We can build you a snack cabinet."
Maybelline immediately signed the contract.
Apparently, we may have lost our ghost to Montana's free-snack program.
We'll investigate that tomorrow.
đ A Champion's Reflection
As the sun set over our little corner of West Virginia, we brought the trophy home and placed it in the living room.
Kiwi was already planning a championship parade.
Peanut was already planning where to hide the trophy so nobody would disturb her naps.
The Quackers twins were already arguing about which one of them had actually won the game.
Gracie was already asking whether there would be a championship rematch.
And Maybelline was floating near the ceiling, humming the national anthem backward just to annoy everyone.
I curled up in my favorite blanket, exhausted but happy.
Today taught me something important.
It doesn't matter if you're a tiny Shih Tzu, a cat with an attitude, a couple of confused ducks, a colorful bird with a loud microphone, or even a ghost with questionable sportsmanship.
When you work together, believe in each other, and occasionally benefit from an opponent losing the baseball in a pile of wood chips, anything is possible.
Especially a championship.
And remember, dear diary:
The road to victory may be long, but the road to the snack table should always be short.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a trophy to admire, a hot dog to finish, and a championship parade to organize.
Tomorrow, we're demanding a spot in the Major Leagues.
I hear the Yankees have excellent catering.
Until next time,
Lucy đž
World Series MVP, Captain of the West Virginia Wild Paws, and undefeated champion of the snack table.
