Lucy's Journal

Well, folks, gather around because today was a day for the history books! And possibly a day for the veterinarian, the groundskeeper, and the local authorities to have a long meeting.

It all started this morning when I, Lucy, a very sophisticated tan-and-white Shih Tzu with a nose for adventure and a strong opinion about snack distribution, discovered that the Animal Kingdom was holding its very own World Series of Baseball!

Now, I know what you're thinking. Lucy, how on earth did you get involved in a major sporting event?

Simple. I heard the words baseball, hot dogs, and unlimited snacks.

I was already halfway out the door before Dad finished his coffee.

๐Ÿถ The Team Assembles

Our team consisted of yours truly as team captain, Peanut the gray tiger cat as our star slugger, Kiwi the green cheek conure as our play-by-play announcer, and the Quackers twins as our pitching and catching duo.

Gracie, our black-and-white Shih Tzu friend, arrived wearing a baseball jersey two sizes too big and carrying a bag of sunflower seeds.

Then, just as we were discussing our batting order, a cold breeze swept across the yard.

Whoooooooosh!

Out floated the Ghost of Maybelline, our beloved brownish pit bull ghost, wearing a transparent baseball cap and carrying a glowing baseball bat.

"BOOOOOOO!" she howled.

Kiwi nearly fell off his perch.

"GOOD GRIEF! CAN WE GET A WARNING BEFORE THE STADIUM SPECIAL EFFECTS START?"

Maybelline grinned. "Sorry, Kiwi. I was going for a dramatic entrance."

Peanut examined her clipboard. "Well, you're late for practice."

"I'm a ghost," Maybelline replied. "I don't have a watch."

Peanut sighed. "This is going to be a long day."

And she was absolutely right.

๐Ÿฆซ Meet the Montana Beaver Bombers!

Our opponents were the mighty Montana Beaver Bombers, a fearsome crew of beavers who had traveled all the way from Montana to compete for the Animal World Series championship.

They arrived in a convoy of tiny wagons loaded with baseball bats, lumber, and enough wood chips to build a small apartment complex.

Their captain, a massive beaver named Buck, stepped onto the field and announced, "We've come all this way to win the championship!"

One of his teammates immediately began chewing on second base.

Buck turned around. "BILL! THAT'S NOT A TREE!"

Bill stopped chewing, looked at the base, and shrugged.

"Well, it looked wooden."

Kiwi flew over to the announcer's booth.

"LADIES AND GENTLECRITTERS! WELCOME TO THE WORLD SERIES! TODAY'S GAME FEATURES THE HOME TEAM, THE WEST VIRGINIA WILD PAWS, AGAINST THE MONTANA BEAVER BOMBERS! THE ODDSMAKERS FAVOR THE BEAVERS BECAUSE THEY HAVE EXPERIENCE BUILDING THINGS UNDER PRESSURE!"

Peanut whispered, "I thought the odds favored us."

Kiwi replied, "They did until I saw the size of their teeth."

⚾ The First Inning: A Quacking Disaster

The game began with Quacker Number One on the mound.

He wound up, flapped both wings, and threw the ball.

Unfortunately, he also threw his hat.

The hat landed on the batter's head.

The batter was so confused that he dropped his bat, sat down, and demanded to speak to the umpire.

The umpire was a very serious-looking owl.

"STRIKE ONE!" the owl hooted.

"But I didn't swing!" protested the beaver.

"Strike two for arguing!"

"That's not fair!"

"STRIKE THREE!"

The owl pointed toward the dugout.

Kiwi nearly fell out of the announcer's booth laughing.

"AND THAT'S OUR FIRST OUT! THE BEAVERS HAVE BEEN DEFEATED BY THE MOST DANGEROUS WEAPON IN BASEBALL: QUESTIONABLE UMPIRE LOGIC!"

Meanwhile, Quacker Number Two was celebrating by waddling in circles around home plate.

We hadn't even made it through the first inning, and already our team was a complete circus.

Naturally, I was proud.

๐Ÿฑ Peanut's Big Moment

By the third inning, the Beavers were leading 3–1.

Our manager, who happened to be me, called a team meeting.

"Okay, everyone. We need a strategy."

Peanut raised her paw.

"Simple. We hit the ball, run around the bases, and don't eat the equipment."

Everyone looked at the Quackers twins.

They suddenly became very interested in a patch of grass.

Peanut stepped up to the plate.

Buck wound up and threw a fastball.

Peanut narrowed her eyes.

The ball came screaming toward home plate.

CRACK!

Peanut hit that ball so hard it sailed over center field, over the outfield fence, over the parking lot, and landed in a Montana Beaver Bombers merchandise tent.

The ball knocked over a display of miniature wooden bats.

A beaver selling souvenirs stared at the wreckage.

"Well," he muttered, "at least the bats are selling."

Peanut trotted around the bases with her tail held high.

"HOME RUN!" Kiwi screamed. "PEANUT HAS JUST SENT THAT BASEBALL INTO A DIFFERENT ZIP CODE!"

The score was now 3–2.

Peanut returned to the dugout and calmly began washing her paws.

I asked, "Aren't you excited?"

She replied, "Of course. But excitement is no excuse for poor hygiene."

I swear that cat was born eighty years old.

๐Ÿ‘ป Maybelline's Ghostly Home-Field Advantage

By the sixth inning, the Beavers had extended their lead to 5–2.

Things were looking grim.

Gracie was pacing in the dugout. The Quackers twins were arguing over who got to keep the game ball. Kiwi was threatening to resign as announcer and become a professional popcorn critic.

Then Maybelline floated toward the pitcher's mound.

"Don't worry, kids," she said. "I've got a plan."

She drifted directly through the Beavers' dugout wall.

A moment later, she emerged wearing Buck's baseball cap.

Buck stared at her.

"HEY! GIVE THAT BACK!"

Maybelline grinned and floated straight through him.

Buck spun around three times, dropped his glove, and shouted, "THEY'VE GOT A GHOST! WHY DIDN'T ANYONE TELL US THE HOME TEAM HAD A GHOST?"

Kiwi grabbed the microphone.

"BREAKING NEWS! MONTANA HAS DISCOVERED THAT WEST VIRGINIA HAS A SECRET WEAPON! SHE DOESN'T NEED A TICKET, SHE DOESN'T NEED A BATHROOM BREAK, AND SHE CAN PASS THROUGH THE WALLS OF THE VISITING LOCKER ROOM!"

The owl umpire blew his whistle.

"INTERFERENCE!"

Maybelline floated back to the dugout.

"What? I didn't touch anybody!"

The umpire consulted the rulebook.

After a long discussion, he ruled that ghosts were technically allowed on the field, provided they did not possess the baseball or scare the concession stand employees.

Maybelline looked disappointed.

"I was really hoping to possess the nacho machine."

๐Ÿฆ† The Quackers Twins Pull Off a Miracle

The bottom of the eighth inning arrived, and we were trailing 5–4.

There were two outs, and the Quackers twins were up to bat.

Now, if you've ever watched two identical ducks try to do anything together, you know the phrase organized chaos doesn't even begin to cover it.

Quacker Number One stepped up to the plate.

He swung.

Missed.

"STRIKE ONE!"

He swung again.

Missed.

"STRIKE TWO!"

The Montana pitcher smirked.

Quacker Number One leaned toward his twin.

"Remember the secret plan?"

Quacker Number Two nodded.

They switched places.

The pitcher threw the ball.

Quacker Number Two swung with all his might.

BONK!

The ball bounced off his helmet, shot straight into the air, and landed in the pitcher's glove.

The pitcher laughed.

Then he realized the ball was stuck inside the duck's helmet.

The owl umpire called, "DEAD BALL!"

While the Beavers argued with the umpire, the twins waddled around the bases.

"WAIT A MINUTE!" Buck shouted. "THEY CAN'T DO THAT!"

Peanut checked the rulebook.

"Actually, they can. The ball was dead, but nobody said the ducks were."

The umpire thought about this for a moment.

Then he shrugged.

"SAFE!"

The twins tied the game 5–5.

Kiwi was practically vibrating with excitement.

"THE QUACKERS HAVE DONE IT! THEY HAVE DISCOVERED A BRAND-NEW BASEBALL STRATEGY! CONFUSE EVERYONE UNTIL THEY GIVE YOU A RUN!"

Gracie was jumping up and down.

I was barking so loudly that three squirrels in the next county filed a noise complaint.

๐Ÿพ The Bottom of the Ninth: Lucy Saves the Day!

And now we arrive at the bottom of the ninth inning.

The score was tied 5–5.

Two outs.

Peanut was on second base.

Gracie was on first.

And I, Lucy, was stepping up to the plate.

The entire stadium went silent.

Even the Beavers stopped chewing on things.

Buck looked at his pitcher and said, "Just throw a slow one. She's a little dog."

I heard him.

I am a little dog.

But I am also a Shih Tzu with championship aspirations and a very serious appetite.

The pitcher wound up.

He threw the ball.

I swung.

CRACK!

The ball shot straight down the third-base line.

I took off running.

My little legs were moving so fast that my ears were flapping like helicopter blades.

First base!

Second base!

Peanut rounded third!

Gracie was right behind her!

The Beavers scrambled after the ball, but their outfielder accidentally threw it into the wood-chip pile they had brought for emergencies.

Three beavers immediately dove in after it.

One came out holding a baseball bat.

Another came out holding a sandwich.

The third came out holding a confused-looking squirrel.

"WHERE'S THE BALL?" Buck screamed.

Nobody knew.

Meanwhile, Peanut crossed home plate.

Gracie crossed home plate.

And I came charging around third base with the determination of a dog who had just heard the treat jar open.

The catcher stood waiting.

I slid.

Well, technically, I tripped over my own paws, rolled across home plate, and landed in a cloud of dust.

But the umpire raised both arms.

"SAFE! GAME OVER! WEST VIRGINIA WINS!"

THE WEST VIRGINIA WILD PAWS HAD WON THE ANIMAL WORLD SERIES!

Final score: West Virginia Wild Paws 6, Montana Beaver Bombers 5.

๐Ÿ† The Championship Celebration

Pandemonium broke out.

The Quackers twins were flapping their wings so hard that the championship banner blew off the scoreboard.

Kiwi flew around the stadium yelling, "WE'RE NUMBER ONE! WE'RE NUMBER ONE! SOMEBODY GET ME A PRESS CONFERENCE AND A BAG OF CHIPS!"

Peanut accepted the championship trophy, inspected it carefully, and announced that it would make an excellent place to nap.

Gracie was busy taking selfies with the trophy.

Maybelline floated through the celebration, making ghostly paw prints in the confetti.

And I, Lucy, was presented with the World Series MVP award.

The trophy was almost as big as I was.

I stood proudly beside it until I noticed the snack table.

There were hot dogs.

There were hamburgers.

There were biscuits.

There was even a giant bowl of popcorn.

I looked at the trophy.

Then I looked at the food.

Then I looked back at the trophy.

"Somebody hold this," I announced. "I've got more important business to attend to."

Peanut shook her head.

"Captain, you can't abandon your trophy."

"I can if there's a hot dog involved."

The Montana Beavers were surprisingly gracious in defeat. Buck shook my paw and congratulated us.

"Well played, Lucy. You earned that win."

Then he leaned closer and whispered, "Do you think we could borrow your ghost for next season?"

Maybelline grinned.

"Only if you have a really good snack budget."

Buck nodded solemnly.

"We can build you a snack cabinet."

Maybelline immediately signed the contract.

Apparently, we may have lost our ghost to Montana's free-snack program.

We'll investigate that tomorrow.

๐ŸŒ™ A Champion's Reflection

As the sun set over our little corner of West Virginia, we brought the trophy home and placed it in the living room.

Kiwi was already planning a championship parade.

Peanut was already planning where to hide the trophy so nobody would disturb her naps.

The Quackers twins were already arguing about which one of them had actually won the game.

Gracie was already asking whether there would be a championship rematch.

And Maybelline was floating near the ceiling, humming the national anthem backward just to annoy everyone.

I curled up in my favorite blanket, exhausted but happy.

Today taught me something important.

It doesn't matter if you're a tiny Shih Tzu, a cat with an attitude, a couple of confused ducks, a colorful bird with a loud microphone, or even a ghost with questionable sportsmanship.

When you work together, believe in each other, and occasionally benefit from an opponent losing the baseball in a pile of wood chips, anything is possible.

Especially a championship.

And remember, dear diary:

The road to victory may be long, but the road to the snack table should always be short.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a trophy to admire, a hot dog to finish, and a championship parade to organize.

Tomorrow, we're demanding a spot in the Major Leagues.

I hear the Yankees have excellent catering.

Until next time,

Lucy ๐Ÿพ

World Series MVP, Captain of the West Virginia Wild Paws, and undefeated champion of the snack table.

Monday

All good things must come to an end—but if you’ve got to wrap up the weekend, today’s a pretty exciting way to do it. Now it’s time to take our collective noses and press them firmly back onto the grindstone of life. Back to work, back to the hustle, back to doing our part to make this spinning rock a better place.

Kiwi and Peanut are once again expanding their paper route / portable snow cones and now adding a mobile earwax removal station. It's Kiwi's innovative marketing: a newspaper, a snow cone, and having your earwax removed all while you wait. I have no idea where he comes up with such brilliant business plans, but he is determined.

Still working 10s again this week, yeah, what else is new. We are actually losing one of our GIS people in Parkersburg, so that is going to have us a person down but that's OK. She's getting a job in what her degree is in, so I wish her the best.

Nothing else planned for me this week out of the ordinary; Michelle is pretty much the same. I know we do need to make an effort to get together with Mom and update a few things in the near future.

Have yourselves a great day.

Sunday

Here I sit on a warm and quiet Sunday Morning. Kiwi and Peanut got frustrated yesterday watching the Mountaineers play and decided to go out and bring the window air conditioner in for the winter since it was a freeze warning last night and all week. They both said they wanted to remain warm inside the house, and they did their part. I was going to do the final mow of the year yesterday, but the ground is still a little wet, and the trees still have leaves on them.

So what is on today's agenda? Kiwi and Peanut are thinking og expanding their business plan and have been hard at work getting ready to put that plan into action.

I have to say, if you see Michelle today, take a little bit of time out and congratulate her. She is at 5 years since she stopped drinking; I got her a five-year coin last week (as well as an unspillable coffee cup) to commemorate this accomplishment. I can't express how proud I am of her, she is an absolutely amazing woman. I love her with all my heart, to say the very least.

The Steelers play this afternoon at 1:00 and are on the road against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Hopefully they can limp through this one and stay in the race for the divisional title and a chance at the playoffs.

Have yourselves a great day.

Saturday Morning Ramblings

Here I sit on a quiet Saturday Morning. Kiwi and Peanut are planning on watching College Gameday this morning; they figure we're well into October and the weather is cooling down, so they are going to relax.

Michelle is going to beat the game day traffic and go grocery shopping before the crowd comes into town for the noon kickoff. I'm not sure what my plans are for the day just yet. I want to cut grass once more, but that is more the mulch the leaves that will be falling mainly.

Michelle will probably be streaming the Cincinnati Zoo's Giraffe cams; there is an indoor one and an outdoor one that are streaming since Tessa is about to pop out a little one in the very near future. So you know where Michelle's attention is going to be until we have a baby giraffe.

Have yourselves a great day, make it a memorable one.

Big Ole Hairy Friday

Yes, it is once again that time of the week that we all look forward to, when we can take time to cease the labors for the week and take a little bit of needed time out to enjoy the fruits of those labors. It is again the dawn of another weekend and a Big Ole Hairy Friday!!!!

Are you ready for a little bit of High School Football? Well the Morgantown Mohigans are on the road once again this week as they travel to Parkersburg South. University High is also on the road in the Eastern Panhandle to take on Spring Mills and Clay Battelle is also on the road this week to take on Tygarts Valley. Good luck to all the local teams this evening, safe travels and bring home a Win.

Not much else planned for me this evening, I know Kiwi and Peanut want to watch the new super hero movie (spiderman) that AI kind of refuses to draw for me. But it is what it is and they will be watching their favorite Superhero (Spider-Man) movie this weekend.

Have yoursleves a great day and let's get this weekend started.

Hi ho hi ho

Happy Birthday Brittany Talerico

I would love to take this time out to wish my beautiful niece, Brittany, a very Happy Birthday today.

It seems like it was only yesterday that she was born, it's amazing how 36 years can go by in the very blink of an eye.... wait what?  When did that happen? It seems like just yesterday I was in the waiting room watching Who's the Boss and Kim and Ed were in the delivery room waiting for this bundle of joy. The amazing thing about all of this is that this remarkable young lady is now fifteen years older than me.

She is an amazing young woman, and I think she has found someone very special to her to spend this day with. Wouldn't you know, she just got married to the love of her life, Matt, and they just celebrated their Second Anniversary on Monday.

If you get a chance to see or talk to this marvelous young lady today, make sure that you take a little bit of time out and wish her the Happiest of Birthdays today.

 Happy Birthday, Brittany.

Photo Flashback Thursday

Once a week, I like to take a little bit of time out, time to look at some of the 30,000+ photos that I have stored on my computer. Little lost moments in time that I either captured with a lens, scanned, or just stole from somewhere on the internet. I like to find just one and post it up, recalling or reliving the picture to the best of my ability. Sometimes this is a pretty easy task, and sometimes it's not that easy, but one thing is that it has always been a lot of fun.

This is a picture of my lovely wife and two sisters-in-law earlier this year at a charity event trying to raise money for a local school district.

The three of them are all wonderful ladies and I am forrtunate that they like taking pictures together. They usually spend every Wednesday afternoon with their mom and have dinner with her up at the rehabilitation center. Three special ladies.

Have yourselves a great day.

Lucy's Journal

October 14, 2026

The Marilla Park Picnic, the Great Water Battle, and Grandpa’s Food Fight Legacy

Dear Journal,

Today started out perfectly normal.

Which, as everyone knows, is usually a warning sign.

I was sitting on the porch enjoying a beautiful October morning when Peanut came running around the corner looking extremely excited.

“LUCY! WE'RE GOING ON A PLAY DATE!”

I looked at her.

“A play date where?”

“Marilla Park!”

Before I could even answer, Kiwi flew down from his perch wearing what appeared to be sunglasses.

“ROAD TRIP!”

The Quackers came waddling behind him in perfect formation.

QUACK. QUACK.

I had a feeling this wasn't going to be an ordinary afternoon at the park.

And I was right.

About ten minutes later, Gracie arrived.

Gracie is a black-and-white Shih Tzu who has never met a situation she didn't think could be improved by adding a little chaos.

Behind her floated the Ghost of Maybelline, the brownish pit bull who has been haunting our adventures ever since she crossed over to the other side.

Maybelline looked around at everyone.

“I smell trouble.”

Peanut smiled.

“That's because we're going to Marilla Park.”

Maybelline sighed.

“Of course you are.”

๐Ÿš— The Expedition to Marilla Park

We loaded up our supplies and headed toward the park.

Kiwi insisted on controlling the music.

He picked Creedence Clearwater Revival.

The minute Bad Moon Rising started playing, Kiwi began bobbing his head.

The Quackers started waddling in rhythm.

Gracie started bouncing around.

Peanut started tapping her paw on the seat.

And I started wondering if anyone in this group knew how to behave in public.

Apparently not.

As we pulled into Marilla Park, Kiwi shouted:

“LOOK! TREES!”

Peanut replied:

“Kiwi, we've seen trees before.”

“NOT THESE TREES!”

He had a point.

The October colors were beautiful.

The leaves were turning red, orange, yellow, and gold, and the whole park looked like someone had thrown a giant box of crayons across the hills.

We found the perfect picnic spot.

And that's when George started telling us about Grandpa George Hall Sr.

๐Ÿงบ Grandpa's Famous Picnics

According to George, Grandpa didn't believe in having a simple picnic.

Nope.

If Grandpa was having a picnic, you knew about it.

There would be food.

Lots of food.

There would be drinks.

Lots of drinks.

There would be blankets, chairs, coolers, baskets, and enough food to feed approximately 47 people—even if only eight people were actually invited.

Peanut's eyes got huge.

“What kind of food?”

“Everything.”

Peanut sat down immediately.

“I'm listening.”

George explained that Grandpa's picnics always seemed to begin peacefully.

Everyone would eat.

Everyone would talk.

Everyone would laugh.

And then...

Someone would get a little too close to the water.

And that's when the Water Battle would begin.

๐Ÿ’ฆ THE WATER BATTLE

Apparently, Grandpa's water battles were legendary.

Someone would get hit with a little water.

Then somebody else would retaliate.

Then somebody would grab a bucket.

Then somebody would grab a hose.

And before long, the entire picnic had turned into a full-scale aquatic war.

Grandpa would be standing in the middle of it laughing.

According to George, Grandpa always seemed to know exactly what was coming.

Peanut looked suspicious.

“So Grandpa started it?”

George thought about it.

“Well... sometimes.”

Maybelline's ghostly ears perked up.

“Sometimes?”

George smiled.

“Let's just say Grandpa never exactly stopped it.”

Kiwi suddenly flew over to the picnic supplies.

“I HAVE AN IDEA!”

I immediately knew this was bad.

“Kiwi, no.”

Kiwi grabbed a little cup.

“WATER!”

“No.”

He dumped it on Peanut.

Peanut froze.

Slowly...

Very slowly...

She looked at Kiwi.

Kiwi looked at Peanut.

Peanut smiled.

“Oh, you're gonna regret that.”

๐Ÿ’ฆ THE GREAT MARILLA PARK WATER WAR

Peanut grabbed a water bottle.

SPLASH!

Kiwi flew backward.

“ATTACK!”

Gracie grabbed a cup.

The Quackers grabbed another cup.

Maybelline disappeared.

For approximately three seconds.

Then a mysterious spray of water came from behind a tree.

“HEY!”

Gracie yelled.

“THE GHOST IS CHEATING!”

Maybelline laughed.

“I'M A GHOST. THERE ARE NO RULES!”

Soon everyone was involved.

Water was flying everywhere.

Kiwi was dive-bombing people with a tiny cup of water in his beak.

Peanut was hiding behind a picnic basket.

Gracie was chasing the Quackers.

The Quackers were chasing Gracie.

And Maybelline was floating around spraying everyone with mysterious ghost water.

Meanwhile, CCR was still playing.

Down on the corner, out in the street...

It was officially the soundtrack to the most ridiculous picnic Marilla Park had seen all year.

๐Ÿ” AND THEN CAME THE FOOD

Eventually everyone calmed down.

We were soaked.

We were tired.

And we were hungry.

So we sat down for lunch.

There were sandwiches.

Chips.

Cookies.

Fruit.

And, naturally, enough food for 47 people.

Peanut looked at the spread.

“Grandpa would approve.”

Everyone agreed.

We started eating.

For approximately four minutes.

Then Kiwi accidentally dropped a piece of bread on Gracie.

Gracie looked at it.

Then she looked at Kiwi.

“Did you just throw food at me?”

Kiwi shook his head.

“No.”

Peanut whispered:

“He absolutely did.”

Gracie picked up a tiny piece of lettuce.

FLING!

It hit Kiwi right in the chest.

Kiwi stared at her.

“Oh, it's ON.”

๐Ÿ• THE GREAT FOOD FIGHT OF MARILLA PARK

Suddenly...

WHAP!

A piece of bread flew through the air.

SPLAT!

A potato chip landed on Peanut.

THUMP!

A cookie bounced off Gracie.

The Quackers discovered that they could throw crackers by flipping their heads.

They immediately became extremely dangerous.

“QUACK! QUACK!”

Maybelline floated through the middle of the battlefield.

“THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT GRANDPA WOULD HAVE WANTED!”

Peanut ducked behind a cooler.

“This is ridiculous!”

A grape bounced off her head.

She stood up.

“WHO THREW THAT?”

Silence.

The Quackers looked innocent.

Kiwi looked innocent.

Gracie looked innocent.

Maybelline looked extremely suspicious.

Then another grape flew through the air.

Peanut yelled:

“CHARGE!”

And the food fight reached maximum intensity.

๐ŸŽถ THE PERFECT SOUNDTRACK

Meanwhile, CCR kept playing.

The leaves were blowing across the park.

The October sun was shining.

Everyone was laughing.

And somewhere in the middle of all the chaos, it suddenly felt like Grandpa was there with us.

George told us that Grandpa's elaborate picnics weren't really about the food.

They were about getting everybody together.

They were about laughing.

They were about making memories.

And apparently, they were about getting soaking wet and throwing potato salad at one another.

Peanut nodded thoughtfully.

“I think Grandpa understood the important things in life.”

“What things?”

“Good food.”

She paused.

“Good friends.”

Another pause.

“And ammunition.”

She pointed toward the remaining water bottles.

๐ŸŒ… Heading Home

By late afternoon, we were exhausted.

Everyone was wet.

Everyone was covered in crumbs.

The Quackers were asleep.

Gracie had a potato chip stuck to her ear.

Kiwi was sitting on George's shoulder singing along with CCR.

And Maybelline was floating quietly beside us.

As we packed everything up, I looked back across Marilla Park.

The trees were glowing in the afternoon sunlight.

The leaves were falling.

And for a moment, everything was peaceful.

Then Peanut found one last water bottle.

She looked at me.

I looked at her.

She smiled.

“No.”

She smiled bigger.

“Peanut...”

SPLASH!

She got me.

I chased her across the grass.

Gracie joined in.

Kiwi started yelling.

The Quackers woke up.

And Maybelline floated behind us laughing.

As we headed home, CCR was still playing.

And I couldn't help thinking...

Maybe the best way to remember someone isn't by sitting quietly and talking about the past.

Maybe it's by doing the things they loved.

Eating too much.

Laughing too hard.

Getting everybody together.

And, apparently...

Starting a water battle that eventually turns into a food fight.

Grandpa would have been proud.

And probably soaking wet.

Love,

Lucy ๐Ÿพ

P.S. Peanut says Grandpa's picnic tradition should become an annual event.

Kiwi says it should become a weekly event.

The Quackers have already started planning.

I'm hiding the water bottles.

Tuesday's Tidbits

* Progress on my Selfie in Space, right here. We are ready for liftoff and holding.

* Earlobes have no biological purpose. While they are rich in nerve endings and may play a role in social bonding, many scientists argue that earlobes don’t have any true biological purpose.

* Most people stroke cats the wrong way. Research shows they often just tolerate it for the food and attention. The safest spots? Under the chin, cheeks and base of the ears. The worst? Their belly and the base of their tail – touch there and you’re more likely to annoy them than bond with them.

* Have a great day.

Kiwi and Peanut are back at it again, except this time they are expanding on their Newspaper routes and because sales were a little slow have decided to also sell snow cones as they are delivering their newspapers. Kiwi insists that they are the only ones with this business model. Who doesn't like a good newspaper to read and a snow cone, all delivered right to your front door? Such an innovative bird.

So back at it again for me today, still working 10s, and after a few months of it I guess that is nothing really new. It's a good thing I like what I am doing, and honestly, the time flies by, both on a daily and weekly basis. I have my cold brew iced tea (thank you to my sister Terri for introducing me to that) and my flavored water bottle, and I am good to go. Throw on a little music on the headphones, and time seems to just fly by.

Also Happy second wedding anniversary to Brittany and Matt. Hopefully Brittany, Matt and Ayden have a wonderful day together.

Have yourselves a great day.

Sunday

Here I sit on a Sunday morning; Kiwi and Peanut are upset because I used the picture of Terri, Daniel, and Kelly from their visit yesterday and not some animation of them doing something.

I will say that yesterday was a special day,  I didn't watch the game, Daniel was in town, and I got to see him and his fiancรฉe, Kelly Jo. I met him at the hotel around noon, and they followed me to see Mom and visit with her for a little while before we headed down to Aunt Terri's for a few hours' visit. We managed to grab a few pics, sat around, and talked; got to know Kelly and had a good ole time.

Michelle is getting sick again, coughing and hacking up. I think she has strep throat and she wants to get well quick.

Just a relaxing day planned as I get ready for another busy week at work.

Have yourselves a great day. make it memorable (and take pictures).

Saturday

Here I sit on a quiet Saturday morning, I am contemplating cutting grass this morning, weather permitting, and this might just be the last cut of the year if I manage to cut the grass today. I have a house full of animals here giving their own input for an all-animal picnic next week. Not sure where they are going or what they have planned just yet.

The Mountaineers do play in Morgantown today against Arizona, a team that Rich used to coach after he left Michigan. We are the underdog this week, probably after watching our swiss cheese defense play the past couple of weeks and not being able to tackle anyone.

Other than a typical Saturday, which means Michelle will be out the door early to grocery shop it's going to be just another typical weekend for us. I will probably just watch some football and hope to not be disappointed by their performance.

Last weekend was busy, this one should be relaxing hopefully.

Have yourselves a great day.

In a rematch of last years AAAA State Championship game Morgantown High will be playing host to Martinsburg over at Pony Lewis Field. University High will be on the road against Jefferson. Out in Blacksville Clay Battelle will be playing host to Richwood. Good luck to all of the local teams this evening.

Interesting College game here tomorrow, we'll call it the Rich Rodrieuz Bowl as Rich has been the head coach of both us and Arizona who we are playing here in Morgantown. Should be an interesting one.

No other big plans for us, it might be time of thinking about taking the AC out of the window for the winter.

Have yourselves a great day.

I stole this one from my niece Amy, who I think stole it from her mother-in-law, Birdie, who was taking pictures for Kaiden's 18th Birthday Party a couple of weeks ago. This is of my sister Terri and her kids, grandkids, and even great-grandkids (although that should be singular right now)for a moment in time captured with a camera.

I mentioned trying to grab a 5-generation pic as Mom was there as well, but Terri said we should do that at Christmas time.

Have yourselves a great day.

The Great Coopers Rock Leaf-Peeping Adventure

Dear Journal,

Today was one of those perfect October days when the air is cool, the sky is blue, and the trees at Coopers Rock look like somebody spilled a giant box of crayons all over the mountains.

After our little geocaching disaster last week, you would think the crew would have learned a lesson.

We did.

We learned that getting lost is actually a lot more fun when you do it on purpose.

So this morning, the whole gang gathered on the porch.

There was me, Lucy, the tan-and-white Shih Tzu and official expedition leader.

Peanut, the gray tiger cat and self-appointed expert in maps, directions, leaves, squirrels, rocks, and things she has absolutely no qualifications to understand.

Kiwi, our green-cheek conure.

The Quackers, the identical twin yellow ducks.

Gracie, the black-and-white Shih Tzu.

And, of course, the Ghost of Maybelline, our brownish pit bull ghost.

Peanut announced:

"Today we're going to Coopers Rock."

Everyone cheered.

Then she added:

"And this time we're going to get lost on purpose."

Everyone cheered louder.

The Ghost of Maybelline just slowly covered her face with one ghostly paw.

She remembered last week.

๐Ÿ‚ INTO THE MOUNTAINS!

We packed lunch, water, snacks, blankets, binoculars, a camera, and—most importantly—NO GPS.

Peanut said GPS would "ruin the adventure."

I think she just didn't want anybody reminding her where we were.

When we arrived at Coopers Rock, the forest was absolutely beautiful.

The leaves were everywhere.

Red.

Orange.

Yellow.

Gold.

Some were still green, like they weren't quite ready to join the party.

The Quackers immediately began collecting leaves.

Within five minutes they had approximately 47 leaves piled on their backs.

Nobody knew why.

They didn't either.

๐Ÿ THE LEAF-PEEPING CONTEST

We decided to have a contest to see who could find the prettiest tree.

I found a beautiful red maple.

Gracie found a golden oak.

Peanut found a tree that had fallen over.

She announced:

"This is clearly the most interesting tree."

Nobody voted for it.

Kiwi flew up into the branches and announced:

"I FOUND THE PRETTIEST TREE!"

We all looked up.

It was spectacular.

The entire tree was glowing red and orange in the sunlight.

Kiwi proudly announced:

"I WIN!"

Peanut protested.

"You can't win. You can fly. That's cheating."

Kiwi replied:

"Being able to fly isn't cheating. It's a skill."

The Quackers immediately agreed.

Mostly because they wanted to fly too.

๐Ÿฆ† THE QUACKERS TAKE FLIGHT

The Quackers suddenly spread their wings.

They ran downhill.

They flapped.

They flapped harder.

They flapped even harder.

And then...

THEY FLEW!

For about twelve feet.

Then they landed in a pile of leaves.

FWOOF!

Two little yellow duck heads popped out.

Everyone started laughing.

The Quackers climbed out of the leaves looking extremely proud.

They immediately tried it again.

This time they flew about thirty feet.

Kiwi flew beside them.

Suddenly we had three birds flying through the autumn leaves.

It was beautiful.

For approximately ten seconds.

Then Kiwi yelled:

"RACE YOU TO THAT TREE!"

The Quackers took off.

And I yelled:

"DON'T FORGET WE'RE SUPPOSED TO GET LOST!"

Too late.

They disappeared around the ridge.

๐ŸŒฒ UH-OH... WE'RE LOST AGAIN

We followed the trail.

Then we left the trail.

Then we found another trail.

Then we followed that trail.

Then Peanut announced:

"I think we're going the wrong way."

Everyone stopped.

I asked:

"How do you know?"

She pointed at the ground.

"Because we've already seen that squirrel."

The Ghost of Maybelline looked at her.

Then floated over to a nearby tree.

She pointed.

There was the squirrel.

The squirrel looked at us.

We looked at the squirrel.

The squirrel looked at Peanut.

Peanut looked at me.

"Okay. We're lost."

I smiled.

"Perfect!"

And off we went.

✨ THE MAGIC OF COOPERS ROCK

As afternoon came, something magical happened.

The sun began shining through the trees.

The autumn leaves glowed.

The wind gently moved the branches.

Leaves floated down around us like colorful snow.

Even the Ghost of Maybelline looked almost solid in the golden sunlight.

We all stopped.

Nobody said anything.

For once.

Even Peanut was quiet.

Kiwi landed on a branch.

The Quackers sat together.

Gracie curled up beside me.

And we simply watched.

It was beautiful.

Then a leaf landed directly on Peanut's head.

She didn't notice.

Another landed on her nose.

Still nothing.

Then one landed in her mouth.

She finally spit it out.

"I HAVE HAD ENOUGH OF NATURE."

Everybody started laughing.

๐Ÿฅช LUNCH IN THE WOODS

We found a beautiful overlook and spread out our blanket.

The view was incredible.

Mountains covered in fall colors stretched as far as we could see.

The Quackers had sandwiches.

Gracie had treats.

I had a little bit of everything.

Peanut had stolen half of Dad's lunch.

Kiwi had absolutely no interest in his food.

He was too busy trying to steal ours.

Finally I caught him.

"Kiwi!"

He looked innocent.

Then he said:

"I was just inspecting it."

I told him:

"With your beak?"

He said:

"That's my inspection equipment."

๐ŸฆŒ THE FOREST VISITOR

While we were eating, we heard something moving through the trees.

Everyone froze.

Something stepped out into the clearing.

A deer.

A beautiful deer stood there watching us.

Even Peanut stopped eating.

The deer stared at us.

Kiwi stared at the deer.

The Quackers stared at the deer.

The deer stared at the Quackers.

Then one of the Quackers said:

"Quack."

The deer walked away.

Apparently that was all the wildlife diplomacy we needed.

๐ŸŒ„ TIME TO FIND OUR WAY HOME

As the sun began dropping lower in the sky, we decided it was time to head back.

Except...

Nobody knew exactly where we were.

Which was precisely what we had planned.

Peanut looked around.

"Okay. Which way is the parking lot?"

Everyone pointed in a different direction.

The Ghost of Maybelline pointed straight through a tree.

Gracie pointed downhill.

I pointed toward the road.

Peanut pointed toward the mountains.

The Quackers pointed toward a pond.

Kiwi flew up into the sky.

A few minutes later he came back.

"Parking lot is that way!"

We followed him.

Then the Quackers flew up too.

They came back and confirmed it.

For once, our flying navigation team actually knew where they were going.

๐Ÿ‚ THE RIDE HOME

As we walked back, the sun was setting behind the mountains.

The sky turned orange and pink.

Leaves continued drifting down around us.

The whole forest seemed to glow.

We had spent the entire day laughing, wandering, getting intentionally lost, eating too much, chasing leaves, flying, and enjoying one of the prettiest places around Morgantown.

When we finally reached the car, everybody was exhausted.

Gracie climbed into her seat.

The Quackers curled up together.

Peanut immediately went to sleep.

Kiwi tucked his head under his wing.

The Ghost of Maybelline disappeared into the back seat.

I climbed in and looked out the window.

The trees were glowing in the evening sunlight.

And I realized something.

Maybe getting lost isn't always a bad thing.

Sometimes you have to wander a little.

Sometimes you have to take the wrong trail.

Sometimes you have to stop following the map.

Because when you do...

You might discover something beautiful that you never would have found otherwise.

And sometimes...

You might even find your way home with a little help from two ducks and a green-cheek conure.

Until next time,

Lucy ๐Ÿพ

P.S. Peanut says next week we're going somewhere that has absolutely no trees, no squirrels, no hiking trails, and no opportunities to get lost.

She suggested the living room.

We're going to ignore her.

Kiwi and Peanut have decided to go into business for themselves, delivering newspapers. I told them both that is one of the jobs I started out with (as well as selling hot dogs at the stadium and caddying at the old golf course) with my working career. I have tried to warn them that the print newspaper industry is pretty much non-existent now, but they are both bound and determined and won't have their dreams ruined by that little fact.

Still working 10's this week and have been since May to be honest with you. I'm actually used to it now and my days do go by quickly because I am always busy either on my major project or putting a product together for someone else. I am the master of the Million Row Pivot Table.

Have yourselves a great day

Sunday

Here I sit on a non-football kind of Sunday; the Steelers played Thursday night, and the Mountaineers played yesterday. Kiwi and Peanut are helping Michelle get ready to go up north today for Abby's Bridal Shower.

Michelle and Danielle will be heading out today to head north as her niece Abby will be having her bridal shower this afternoon. She is scheduled to get married later this month (on Halloween) and they are having the bridal shower this afternoon. It's up in Bethel Park, PA.

What does that mean for me? No elaborate dinner, but I am looking for some good chilli dogs and homemade French fries somewhere. I like Walzy's in Cheat Lake, but they are not open today. We'll have to wait and see this afternoon.

Have yourselves a great day.

Saturday Morning Ramblings

Here I sit, yet once again in a quiet household. Kiwi and Peanut are trying their darndest to say that I need to cut the grass again; I think they want to ride around on the tractor, to be honest. I think we will take this day off from grass cutting, much to a couple of pets' dismay.

No real plans today; Michelle will be in no rush to grocery shop (I'm assuming) as WVU plays on the road this week and there will be no game day traffic to contend with.

If anyone is interested and looking for some local produce, there is a Farmers Market this morning at 8:30 down on Spruce Street for anyone looking for locally grown products and/or you are just looking for something to do to pass the time away today. If not that, there is always football to watch!!!!

Have a great day.

Looking for a little bit of High School Football? Morgantown High is on the road against Wheeling Park. This will be played close to where my brother Gary lives, pretty much within 5 minutes. University High is at home against Linsley, a private school that my niece Brittany attended for a semester or so. Clay Battelle is also on the road this week against Meadow Bridge. They will have 3 1/2 to 4 hours of travel each way; I would hope they let them out of school early for this game.

Speaking of football, it was 53 years ago today that I had the worst injury of my life playing pickup football. Left thigh and a greenstick fracture that caused me to have a pin drilled through my leg, 4 weeks in traction lying in the hospital with that pin having weight on it, 6 weeks immobilized in a body cast all the way up to my breast area from the left leg and halfway down my right, a couple more weeks in the hospital in traction to straighten my leg back out, then a couple of weeks in a straight leg cast. I was ready to play by baseball season. My left leg is slightly longer than my right, making me 1/2" taller on my left leg than on my right. That made for a long winter to say the least.

Have yourselves a great day.

Sometimes this is a pretty easy task, and sometimes it's not that easy, but one thing it has always been a lot of fun.

Now that I have come across this photo again, I have to make it a Photo Flashback. This is from 1983 and WVU had just beaten Pitt for the first time in a few years, Jeff Hostetler ran in the winning touchdown. Yes that is me on the left, I used to love that shirt BTW and I was walking up Sunnyside to meet up with Smitty at the old bullpen. Which is kind of funny when you consider I didn't drink (I still don't) during those years.

Funny thing is, I never knew about this picture until a couple of years ago when I saw it on Facebook. I pretty much read the paper every day during those years and I not only missed it so did my Dad who also read the paper every day, either that or he just didn't say anything about it. There is another one of me a year later (drunk as a skink that time) carrying the goal post to the stadium loop after we had beaten Penn State, but I think that picture was in the old Collosantes before it caught fire.

Have yoursleves a great day.
