Big Ole Hairy Friday

Yes, it is once again that time of the week that we all look forward to when we can take time to cease the labors for the week and take a little bit of needed time out to enjoy the fruits of those labors. It is again the dawn of another weekend and a Big Ole Hairy Friday!!!!

Are you looking for a little bit of Cheap Entertainment this evening, and by cheap, I mean free? Well, head on down to the Ruby Ampitheatre this evening and see Ashley Cooke this evening starting at 7:00. I have to be honest, I don't know who she is or anything about her, but that may be a reason for a pleasant surprise. This will be the next-to-last concert of the summer.

No big plans for us this weekend, I might cut grass tomorrow as the grass cutting season is starting to draw to a close for 2026. There might be another month or so of time to cut it, but who knows.

Have yourselves a great day.

Photo Flashback Thursday

Once a week, I like to take a little bit of time out, time to look at some of the 30,000+ photos that I have stored on my computer. Little lost moments in time that I either captured with a lens, scanned, or just stole from somewhere on the internet. I like to find just one and post it up, recalling or reliving the picture to the best of my ability. Sometimes this is a pretty easy task, and sometimes it's not that easy, but one thing it has always been a lot of fun.

This pic goes back 10 years to 2016 when I went to the Federal Users Conference in Washington DC. I stayed in Arlington, Virginia, and rode the subway over; it dropped me right off at the convention center.

Funny thing about this pic: this was a really nice hotel, and I was looking for it this week on Google earth and couldn't find it. There is a reason for that, and the word is demolition. They knocked it down and are building some kind of conference center in its place. The road in the background leads to Arlington Cemetery, and on the other side of that, the Pentagon.

Have yourselves a great day.

Lucy's Journal

August 19, 2026

Dear Journal,

Morgantown has been invaded!

Well...maybe "invaded" is a little dramatic. The new college students are arriving in town, and everywhere we looked today there were freshmen carrying boxes, backpacks, maps, coffee cups, and enough luggage to stay here for ten years.

Peanut was sitting on the front porch watching the commotion.

"Why are there so many people wandering around staring at their phones?" she asked.

"They're freshmen," I explained.

Kiwi flew down from the tree.

"Freshmen? Excellent! They won't know where anything is!"

His eyes got really big.

"I HAVE A PLAN."

That sentence is never a good sign.

A few minutes later, Gracie arrived, followed closely by the Ghost of Maybelline.

"What's going on?" Gracie asked.

"We're going on a walking tour of Morgantown," I said.

Maybelline smiled.

"That sounds innocent enough."

Kiwi grinned.

"It won't be."

The Quackers immediately started laughing.

"Quack!"

"Quack quack!"

And off we went.

As we walked around Morgantown, we saw freshmen everywhere.

Some were looking for their dorms.

Others were trying to find the WVU Coliseum.

One poor student was standing in the middle of the sidewalk holding a map upside down.

Peanut whispered, "That's our target."

"Absolutely not," I said.

"Relax," Peanut replied. "We're only going to help them become slightly more confused."

Our first prank involved a campus map.

While nobody was looking, the Quackers carefully moved a little directional arrow on a temporary joke sign.

Instead of pointing toward the Coliseum, it pointed toward a nearby parking lot.

The freshman followed it for about twenty feet before realizing something wasn't right.

"This map is terrible!" he exclaimed.

We ducked behind a bush.

The Quackers were laughing so hard they could barely stand.

Then Kiwi got involved.

He flew overhead shouting,

"FOLLOW THE BIRD! I KNOW WHERE I'M GOING!"

The students looked up.

Kiwi flew one direction.

Then another.

Then made a giant circle.

Then landed on a street sign.

"I have absolutely no idea where I am," he announced.

Peanut shook her head.

"At least he's honest."

Next came our greatest masterpiece.

We found a temporary campus directional sign and turned one of the little arrows around.

Suddenly the sign appeared to tell people that the football stadium was in the opposite direction.

Gracie started laughing.

"Lucy, this is terrible!"

"It's only temporary," I said.

Maybelline floated through the sign.

"Besides, I'm pretty sure ghosts don't have to worry about getting lost."

"That's because you can go through walls," I reminded her.

"Excellent point."

Meanwhile, Kiwi had developed a completely different prank strategy.

He was flying above the sidewalks watching the freshmen.

"Target acquired!"

"Kiwi," I warned.

"I'm going to perform the ancient art of aerial bird bombing!"

He swooped down dramatically.

Everyone looked up.

Kiwi tried his best...

...but completely missed.

Instead, his little surprise landed harmlessly on the pavement several feet away.

He flew back up laughing.

"TACTICAL MISS!"

"More like terrible aim," Peanut said.

Kiwi circled around for another attempt, but I finally convinced him that we should probably stop before somebody had to clean up after us.

He landed on my head.

"Fine. But I'm still practicing."

Eventually, our pranks became more helpful.

We straightened the maps we had moved.

We pointed confused freshmen toward the correct buildings.

We even helped one student who had been walking around in circles for nearly twenty minutes.

"See?" Gracie said. "We're actually being helpful now."

Peanut nodded.

"Mostly."

The Quackers looked disappointed.

They had apparently enjoyed being campus navigation consultants.

As the afternoon went on, Morgantown became even busier.

Cars were everywhere.

Parents were unloading furniture.

U-Haul trucks were squeezing through town.

Students were carrying mini-fridges, televisions, laundry baskets, and enormous boxes.

Kiwi flew overhead providing commentary.

"Freshman approaching!"

"Freshman carrying microwave!"

"Freshman has six pillows!"

"Freshman appears to have brought their entire bedroom!"

The Quackers started keeping score.

By the end of the afternoon, they had counted 37 U-Haul trucks, 19 overloaded cars, and approximately 9,000 freshmen.

Peanut pointed out that the last number might be slightly exaggerated.

As the sun began to set, we stopped near a quiet part of town.

We looked back at all the activity.

"It's kind of exciting," Gracie said.

"It is," I agreed.

Maybelline smiled.

"Every August brings new people, new adventures, and new memories."

Kiwi suddenly flew overhead.

"AND NEW PEOPLE TO CONFUSE!"

Everyone laughed.

Peanut looked at him.

"Tomorrow, perhaps we should let the freshmen find their own way."

Kiwi thought about it.

"Okay."

Then he grinned.

"But I'm keeping the map."

Until next time, dear Journal.

Today we learned that Morgantown is much more fun when you're a dog, cat, bird, duck, or ghost—and you already know where you're going.

Although, judging by Kiwi's navigation skills...

maybe none of us actually know where we're going.

Paws, feathers, quacks, and ghostly giggles,

Lucy 🐾

Monday

All good things must come to an end—but if you’ve got to wrap up the weekend, today’s a pretty exciting way to do it. Now it’s time to take our collective noses and press them firmly back onto the grindstone of life. Back to work, back to the hustle, back to doing our part to make this spinning rock a better place.

Kiwi and Peanut are making up for last weeks labor strike, Kiwi is with me and Peanut went with Michelle so they can do two different jobs today. Seeds and Catnip are what they are working for.

Still working 10's, no idea how long this is approved for but it may be a while. There is a lot of cleanup they want to do before we transition a system that they have in place into our system. It'll make it easier for everyone and increase the need for GIS moving forward. Don't tell Kiwi, he will want to re-renegotiate his seed package.

Have yourselves a great day

The Adventures of Kiwi and Peanut: A Journal From Our Perspective

It is us, the stars of George's Journal: Kiwi and Peanut. Dad is over-snoozing in the recliner, so we thought we would take the opportunity to pick up some of his slack. And what do we get for this? Catnip and seeds. Not a strong negotiating tactic on our part when we want fresh fish for both of us.

Like we said, Dad is over-snoozing in the recliner. He usually pre-writes these things, but it is up to us, on the day it is published, to provide your entertaining content. Good job, Dad; you forgot. So here goes our attempt at your job from our perspective.

Hello, humans!

It’s us—Kiwi and Peanut—reporting live from our highly sophisticated headquarters, otherwise known as the house.

We decided it was finally time to tell our side of the story. After all, there seems to be an awful lot of writing about us, but somehow nobody has ever asked the two most important members of the household what we think about everything.

So here goes.

Meet the Team

I’m Kiwi, a green cheek conure. I’m small, colorful, extremely intelligent, and, according to Peanut, just a little bit noisy.

Peanut is a gray tiger cat. She would like everyone to know that she is in charge.

I would like everyone to know that she thinks she is in charge.

We have agreed to disagree.

Our adventures have also included Lucy, the tan-and-white Shih Tzu, who has become quite famous for keeping her own journal. Then there are the Quackers, a pair of identical twin ducks who seem to show up whenever something interesting is happening.

Honestly, we couldn't ask for a better crew.

We Are GIS Professionals

People seem surprised that a bird and a cat understand GIS.

We don't understand why.

Peanut is particularly good at sitting directly in front of the computer monitor whenever important GIS work is happening. This is called quality control.

I specialize in keyboard supervision, mouse inspection, and occasionally yelling when somebody is using the wrong button.

We've spent plenty of time working with maps, ArcGIS Pro, pipelines, roads, GPS data, dashboards, and all sorts of other GIS stuff.

Peanut's favorite GIS tool is the Delete key.

Mine is whatever key makes the most interesting noise.

We've even worked on GIS projects involving Hope Gas. Between pipeline maps, utility networks, material types, pipe sizes, and GPS data, there is never a shortage of work.

And if somebody says, “I'm just going to do one quick thing in ArcGIS,” we know better.

Three hours later, they're still sitting there.

Our Outdoor Adventures

We are also serious outdoor professionals.

There have been lawn-mowing operations.

There have been backyard investigations.

There have been people-watching expeditions.

And there have been days when we have sat outside watching all the activity around Morgantown.

When new students start moving into town and the U-Haul trucks begin appearing everywhere, Peanut and I take our positions and carefully monitor the situation.

Peanut watches the people.

I watch the birds.

We both watch for snacks.

That's teamwork.

The Great Lawn-Mowing Controversy

There was, however, a serious labor dispute.

We were prepared to cut the grass.

We had the equipment.

We had the attitude.

We had the professional expertise.

And then somebody said the grass was too wet.

Naturally, we were furious.

We immediately considered going on strike.

We even made signs demanding better working conditions and more seeds and catnip.

Our official position was simple:

Unfair feeding practices will not be tolerated.

Peanut wanted more catnip.

I wanted more seeds.

Neither of us was willing to negotiate.

Eventually, cooler heads prevailed.

But we're keeping an eye on management.

Entertainment Department

When we're not working, we like to have fun.

We've played video games, including competitive games on the television.

We've played board games.

We've tried games like Monopoly, Yahtzee, Pictionary, Operation, Perfection, and even Centipede.

Peanut claims she is the champion of Perfection.

I claim she cheated.

She says cats don't cheat.

They simply have alternative strategies.

We've also been known to dance around the house, listen to music, and generally make a lot of noise.

There have been backyard parties.

There have been concerts.

There have even been adventures where we imagined ourselves singing along with the music.

Peanut isn't much of a singer.

She purrs.

I sing.

Therefore, I am obviously the musical talent.

We Are Also WVU Fans

We love West Virginia.

That means we are naturally interested in West Virginia University.

We've followed WVU football, basketball, and baseball.

We've watched games.

We've worn WVU gear.

We've celebrated victories.

And we've had plenty to say about Mountaineer sports.

Peanut's favorite WVU tradition is probably relaxing.

My favorite is yelling “Let's Go Mountaineers!”

Very loudly.

Several times.

The Lucy's Journal Situation

Our friend Lucy has her own journal, and we've appeared in quite a few of her adventures.

Lucy is usually the narrator.

That means she gets to tell everybody what happened.

Unfortunately, she occasionally leaves out important details.

For example, she might say:

“Today we went on an adventure.”

What she doesn't mention is that Peanut was probably responsible for the adventure, I was probably making noise, the Quackers were probably following us, and somebody probably ended up somewhere they weren't supposed to be.

We've had adventures involving shopping trips, games, fishing, backyard projects, gardening, the Morgantown Mall, the PRT, lawn tractors, and all kinds of ridiculous schemes.

We wouldn't trade any of it.

Our Human

Our human has spent a lot of time working with GIS, maps, computers, data, and all sorts of technical projects.

We've decided that this makes him especially useful.

After all, who else would provide the computer?

Who else would provide the keyboard?

Who else would provide the snacks?

Exactly.

We've also learned that humans sometimes need reminders.

For example:

The grass needs cut.

The birds need seeds.

The cat needs catnip.

The humans need to relax.

These are important household responsibilities.

We take them very seriously.

A Typical Day

A normal day for us might go something like this:

Wake up.

Inspect the house.

Check the backyard.

Check the food situation.

Check the weather.

Check the computer.

Do some GIS.

Take a break.

Watch the neighborhood.

Investigate suspicious activity.

Eat.

Take another break.

Do more GIS.

Consider going on strike.

Eat again.

Watch television.

Plan tomorrow's adventure.

Go to sleep.

Repeat.

It's a demanding schedule.

Our Philosophy

After everything we've done, we've learned a few important things.

Life is better with friends.

A backyard is always worth investigating.

A computer keyboard is never unattended.

GIS is more fun when a cat and a bird are involved.

Never trust a duck who says, “I have an idea.”

Never underestimate a Shih Tzu with a journal.

And most importantly:

There is always time for another adventure.

So that's our story.

We're Kiwi and Peanut.

We're coworkers.

We're backyard supervisors.

We're professional troublemakers.

We're entertainers.

We're WVU fans.

We're GIS assistants.

We're occasionally unionized labor.

And, most of all, we're family.

Tomorrow we'll probably be back at the computer.

Peanut will supervise.

I'll provide technical support.

Someone will probably say we're making too much noise.

And before the day is over, we'll almost certainly find something else to get into.

Because that's just what we do.

Until next time—

Kiwi 🦜 & Peanut 🐱

Saturday Morning Ramblings

Here I sit once again in a quiet household; Michelle is going to go do the rest of the grocery shopping this morning. No need to cut grass today; I ended up doing it on Sunday Afternoon last week.

Funny story though, we took Pearl in to get her inspected on Monday. We had a headlight burnt out, but Michelle noticed Sunday it was working. So I took it to the garage, and Brian even checked both lights, high and low beam. Michelle started the car up, and I was ahead of her, and everything looked fine. We pulled into the driveway, and I noticed that the passenger side light was not on. I half wonder if we have a loose connection, but when I change headlights, I change both sides out, and I have two packages of 2 in the garage (in case both cars lost all their headlights at the same time), and we'll change them out this afternoon, I guess. Peanut and Kiwi decided to end their labor strike.

Give yourself a little extra time to get around this weekend. WVU students are coming back and classes start on Tuesday. Which means they will all be moving in this weekend. My advice, if you are goig shopping and you want to avoid the crowds, get an early start on that because I would imaging stores will be crowded all weekend.

Have yourselves a great day and a great weekend.

Well, head on down to the Ruby Ampitheatre this evening and Mmmm Bop your way to see Hanson. They have been mmm bopping all day long and are ready to see the 90's sensation who will take the stage this evening at 7:00.

What is on our agenda for this evening, of course Kiwi and Peanut want fed before they head downtown. Michelle will be doing the Sam's club shopping, and I would advise her to go early as students are reallly starting to make their presence known.

Have yourselves a great day.

This weeks pic goes back a few years, I was living at Barrington North and Terri and Mom had come to visit, notice I had hair back then.

Can anyone guess who the baby is that I am holding? None other than Miss Amy not too long after she entered this world and decided to come over and say hello for a visit. The first time I held Val, I treated and held her like a Hamburger, with Amy I was a little more mature and seasoned.

Have yourslevess a great day.

Lucy's Journal

August 12, 2026

Dear Journal,

Today was one for the record books!

This morning started quietly enough. Peanut was stretched out on the couch enjoying a nap, Kiwi was practicing his "sports announcer voice" from the top of the bookshelf, and the Quackers were playing a very serious game of "Who Can Splash the Biggest Puddle."

Suddenly, there was a knock at the door.

"Company!" I barked.

Standing on the porch was our good friend Gracie, her tail wagging a mile a minute.

Just as we welcomed her inside, a familiar cool breeze drifted through the room.

"The Ghost of Maybelline has arrived!" Kiwi proclaimed dramatically.

Maybelline floated in with her usual warm smile.

"I heard someone mention basketball."

Kiwi's eyes lit up.

"Not just basketball..."

He flapped his wings excitedly.

"...WVU COLISEUM BASKETBALL!"

Well, that settled it.

Off we went!

When we arrived at the WVU Coliseum, we stood in amazement.

The enormous arena stretched high above us.

The polished hardwood floor gleamed under the bright lights.

Blue and gold seats surrounded the court like a giant sea of Mountaineer pride.

Kiwi flew to center court and spread his wings.

"Ladies and Gentlemen," he announced at the top of his lungs, "welcome to the First Annual Lucy and Friends Invitational!"

The echo made it sound surprisingly official.

We divided into teams.

Team Blue

  • Lucy
  • Kiwi
  • One Quacker

Team Gold

  • Peanut
  • Gracie
  • The Other Quacker

Maybelline volunteered to be the referee.

"It's hard to argue with a ghost referee," Peanut observed.

She was absolutely right.

The opening tip was...

...interesting.

Kiwi tried to jump for the ball.

Instead, he accidentally landed on top of the basketball.

It rolled across the court with Kiwi riding it like a rodeo champion.

"I MEANT TO DO THAT!" he yelled.

Peanut dribbled like she'd been secretly practicing for years.

Left paw.

Right paw.

Spin move.

She glided down the court with incredible grace.

"I watch a lot of sports," she admitted.

Gracie was unstoppable on defense.

Every time Lucy tried to drive to the basket, Gracie politely—but firmly—blocked the path.

"Nothing personal," she smiled.

"It's just good defense."

The Quackers turned out to be amazing passers.

One would catch the ball with his wings.

The other would immediately quack for a pass.

Soon they had developed an entire offense based almost entirely on synchronized quacking.

Even Maybelline applauded.

Then came Kiwi's greatest moment.

He flew toward the basket carrying the ball.

"This is for the highlight reel!"

He attempted a spectacular slam dunk...

...and completely missed the hoop.

The basketball bounced off the backboard...

Hit the mascot logo at center court...

Rolled between Gracie's legs...

And somehow bounced perfectly into the basket anyway.

Kiwi landed with both wings raised.

"I CALCULATED THAT!"

Nobody believed him.

But the basket counted.

By halftime everyone was exhausted.

Lucy had scored six points.

Peanut had eight.

Gracie had several impressive rebounds.

The Quackers had somehow accumulated four assists and three technical fouls for excessive celebrating.

Kiwi insisted he'd scored at least fifty points.

The official scorebook disagreed.

Then our noses all twitched at exactly the same moment.

"Do you smell that?" I asked.

"HOT DOGS!" barked Gracie.

"PRETZELS!" quacked the Quackers.

"BUTTERED POPCORN!" Kiwi shouted so loudly the rafters echoed.

Peanut simply smiled.

"I was hoping someone would notice."

Without another word...

...we all marched toward the concession stand.

The friendly concession workers laughed as our unusual group approached.

Soon we had gathered quite a feast.

Warm buttery popcorn overflowing from giant tubs.

Fresh hot dogs with mustard and ketchup.

Huge soft pretzels sprinkled with coarse salt.

Massive cups of ice-cold soda nearly as tall as Kiwi.

Kiwi disappeared headfirst into the popcorn bucket.

Only his little green tail feathers stuck out.

Every few seconds a muffled voice came from inside.

"Best...day...ever!"

Lucy carefully enjoyed a hot dog while trying not to get mustard on her fur.

Gracie folded her pretzel in half before eating it.

"Much easier this way," she explained.

Peanut sipped from an enormous soda.

"I regret nothing."

The Quackers discovered that popcorn tossed into the air is much more fun than popcorn eaten normally.

Soon they were performing synchronized popcorn catches that would have impressed circus performers.

Maybelline floated nearby, smiling as she watched everyone enjoy themselves.

She couldn't eat, but she loved seeing all of us laughing together.

"Seeing everyone happy fills me up," she said softly.

For a moment, we all smiled.

Then Kiwi emerged from the popcorn bucket wearing it like a helmet.

"I am now Captain Popcorn!"

The serious moment didn't last very long.

Before heading home, we gathered at center court for one final team photo.

The bright lights reflected off the polished hardwood.

The blue-and-gold seats stretched endlessly around us.

For just a moment, it felt like we'd played the biggest basketball game in Mountaineer history.

As we walked toward the exit, Kiwi looked back at the court.

"You know..."

"What?" I asked.

"We should probably stick to basketball."

"Why's that?"

"Because if we try hockey next..."

He looked over at the Quackers.

"...they're going to think they're professionals."

The Quackers looked at one another.

"Quack."

"Definitely professionals."

Everyone burst into laughter all the way back to the car.

It wasn't about who won.

It wasn't about the scoreboard.

It was about spending another wonderful day together, making memories we'll never forget.

Until next week, dear Journal.

With happy paws, proud feathers, synchronized quacks, full bellies, and one smiling ghost,

Lucy 🐾

Kiwi and Peanut have both decided that they are going to go on strike and will not go to work with either Michelle or I today. They claim they are holding out for more fair feeding practices. Peanut wants more catnip and Kiwi wants more seeds, so they are circling around the driveway with their picket signs

Pearl goes into the shop for her two-year inspection. I fear that it may need some tie rods, so I say get them done if they need it. Brian at Hartsells has always been more than fair with me and I trust his opinions. So we'll drop the car off before work them Michelle will pick me up after work and we'll go pick it up then.

Have yourselves a great day.

Sunday

Here I sit once again in a quiet household. I have two pets that are a bit upset with me because it was too wet to cut the grass yesterday. They were not too happy yesterday and they are not too happy today either. Something about going on strike.

It was raining yesterday morning so I did not get a chance to cut grass like I wanted to, we may try it again today if everything dries up and I can get a good cut on it.

We're dropping Pearl off tomorrow for her inspection; not sure if it needs any work, but I trust my mechanic. If something needs fixed we'll get it fixed.

I stopped over to see Mom yesterday and took her Lucy's Dog License for the year. It's a lot cheaper for me to get them ($3.00) as opposed to her, who is inside city limits ($8.00), so I grab them every year for her.

Have yoursleves a great day, make it special and memorable.

Saturday

Here I am once again, in a semi-quiet household. Kiwi and Peanut are begging me to let them cut the grass this morning, weather permitting. I told them it is all gassed up (I filled it up last week right before I filled the gas cans), knock yourselves out. I don't mean that literally, because I gave myself a concussion last summer one time when a tree branch smacked me in the noggin.

Michelle is doing the grocery shopping today, as I keep an eye on my little grass cutters. We'll plan out our menu, and then Michelle will go shop for what we need to make our menu for the week. Same stuff, just a different week.

We are going to drop Pearl off at Hartsells on Monday morning; she is due for her two-year inspection (did Ice last month when I had the brakes changed). Already have 4 new tires on Pearl, and I need to change out my headlights today or tomorrow.  I can't remember which car, but for one of them I have to pull the battery to change the driver's side headlight. I already have the bulbs; when one goes, I just always change both of them. I get them much cheaper off of Amazon, and I have a couple sets in reserve from earlier this year.

Have yourselves a great day.

Well, head on down to the Ruby Ampitheatre this evening and see Who's Bad, a Michael Jackson Tribute Band this evening. Kiwi and Peanut started the weekend celebrating a little bit early with their own party in the back yard.

No big plans for the weekend that I know of. I may cut grass tomorrow weather permitting and we are putting Pearl into the shop on Monday to get it inspected and have any repairs made to it that she may need. We'll drop it off to Hartsell's first thing Monday Morning and then pick it up after we both get off of work.

Have yoursleves a great day.

Happy Birthday Randy Hamrick

I would like to take this opportunity to wish my Nephew Randy Lee Hamrick a very Happy Birthday today.

If my math is correct, and I know that it is because I use an abacus, Randy should be celebrating his 38th Birthday today. Wow if he is 38 I must be getting to be over 21, or at least people aren't going to believe me when I lie about my age anymore.

Randy is a multi-talented handyman and has been  for a number of years as well as some of his own stuff. I'm very proud of him and who he has become.

I'm not sure what Randy has planned for the day or if there is even anything planned for him, but he is loved by his entire family and has taken the title of world's greatest uncle from me from what I understand.

If you happen to see Randy today, make sure you wish him a very Happy Birthday.

Happy Birthday, Bub.

This one goes back 15 years to the day. How do I know that, because today is mine and Michelle's 15th Wedding Anniversary. We were married by a co-worker of hers who had marrying someone as an item on his bucketlist.

Have yoursleves a great day

Hi ho hi ho

Happy 15th Wedding Anniversary to my wonderful wife.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish my wonderful wife a very Happy 15th Wedding Anniversary. A day 15 years ago when I went from a life of being a Bachelor to being a married man. Best decsion I have ever made in my life.

It has been 15 wonderful years of marital bliss with the most wonderful person it has ever been my pleasure of meeting, the one who has changed my life for the better.

Michelle is the absolute love of my life, and this was a very special day for me. Jimmy Buffett themed, and we feasted on food being surrounded by friends and family.

To my wonderful wife Michelle, I love you with all my heart, and here is to the next 15+ years. Happy Anniversary.

Lucy's Journal

August 5, 2026

Dear Journal,

Today will forever be remembered as The Great Mountaineer Field Goal Championship of 2026.

It all started after breakfast when Kiwi landed on the kitchen table wearing a tiny blue-and-gold bandana.

"I HAVE AN IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT!" he squawked.

Peanut didn't even open one eye.

"If this is about sunflower seeds again..."

"It is NOT!" Kiwi replied proudly. "Today we determine who has the strongest kicking foot in West Virginia!"

"Or paw," I corrected.

"Or beak," Kiwi added.

"Or webbed feet," said the Quackers together.

Just then there was a familiar knock at the door.

It was our good friend Gracie!

Not five seconds later the room became cool, and a gentle glow floated through the wall.

"The Ghost of Maybelline has arrived!" Kiwi announced like a stadium announcer.

Maybelline smiled.

"I heard there was going to be football."

"You heard correctly," I said.

Our destination?

Milan Puskar Stadium at West Virginia University!

The stadium looked enormous as we walked through the tunnel and out onto the beautiful green field.

Kiwi immediately spread his wings.

"I can already hear seventy thousand imaginary fans cheering!"

The Quackers began chanting,

"Let's Go Mountaineers!
Quack! Quack! Quack!"

Peanut rolled her eyes.

"I preferred the quiet library."

We decided to have our own field goal contest.

The rules were simple.

Kick the football as far as you can.

Winner gets bragging rights...

...and the first hot dog.

First up: Me!

I took three determined steps.

Wagged my tail.

Kicked with all my might...

The football sailed...

A magnificent...

Twelve feet.

Everyone applauded politely.

"I'll take it," I said.

Next came Peanut.

She casually walked over to the football.

Looked at it.

Looked at all of us.

Then smacked it with one paw.

The football bounced sideways and accidentally knocked over the kicking tee.

"I meant to do that," she said.

Nobody believed her.

Then Kiwi strutted onto the field.

He insisted he didn't need feet.

"I shall kick...WITH SCIENCE!"

He flapped both wings furiously and somehow managed to launch himself backward while the football barely rolled forward six inches.

"I was testing wind conditions," he explained.

The Quackers worked together.

One duck steadied the football.

The other duck took a running start.

QUACK!

The kick actually wasn't bad.

The football bounced nearly thirty yards before stopping.

They celebrated with synchronized victory dances.

Gracie was surprisingly athletic.

She backed up.

Focused.

Ran forward.

THUMP!

The football flew high into the air and landed somewhere around the thirty-yard line.

Everyone cheered.

"That's going to be tough to beat!" I barked.

Then came Maybelline.

She floated gently over to the football.

"Being a ghost," she smiled, "I'm not sure this will work."

She lightly touched the football with one ghostly paw.

To everyone's amazement, the football slowly lifted into the air by itself.

It floated...

Drifted...

Spun gracefully...

And landed perfectly between the uprights.

The entire stadium echoed with imaginary applause.

Kiwi nearly fell off the goalpost.

"I OBJECT!" he yelled.

"Ghost magic!"

Maybelline laughed.

"I'll gladly accept an exhibition victory."

So Gracie was declared the official champion.

Maybelline received the "Most Spectacular Kick" award.

Kiwi awarded himself the "Most Creative Attempt."

After all that kicking, everyone's stomach began rumbling.

Peanut looked toward the concourse.

"I smell popcorn."

Kiwi froze.

"I smell hot dogs."

The Quackers gasped.

"I smell pretzels!"

Without saying another word...

...we all raced toward the concession stands.

It was glorious.

Fresh popcorn filled giant tubs.

Hot dogs rolled on warm grills.

Pretzels the size of steering wheels.

Nachos.

Peanuts.

Cotton candy.

Even giant soft cookies.

Kiwi dove headfirst into a mountain of popcorn.

"I HAVE FOUND HEAVEN!"

Popcorn exploded everywhere as he happily tunneled through it like a little green feathered submarine.

Peanut carefully inspected the hot dog roller.

"For quality control," she insisted.

She sampled exactly one.

Then another.

Then "just one more to be absolutely certain."

The Quackers somehow discovered an unattended box of popcorn and immediately declared themselves "Official Taste Testers."

Soon they were tossing popcorn into the air and catching it in perfect synchronization.

Gracie politely enjoyed a hot dog with mustard.

She even remembered to use a napkin.

Then there was Maybelline.

Being a ghost, she couldn't actually eat anything.

Instead, she floated beside us smiling while enjoying the wonderful smells.

"It's almost as good as tasting it," she said.

So we all shared stories while she enjoyed the company.

As the sun began to set behind the stadium, we sat together high in the stands looking out over the field.

It was peaceful.

The breeze gently rustled the blue and gold flags.

Kiwi quietly said,

"You know...today wasn't really about winning."

Peanut nodded.

"It was about spending time together."

The Quackers agreed.

"Quack."

"Double quack."

Maybelline smiled softly.

"The best memories are the ones you make with friends."

Even Kiwi didn't have a smart remark.

For almost five whole seconds.

Then he stood up.

"NEXT WEEK...WE COMPETE TO SEE WHO CAN THROW THE BEST SPIRAL!"

We all laughed so hard that echoes bounced through the empty stadium.

Some adventures are about trophies.

Others are about popcorn.

Today was definitely about both.

Until next week, dear Journal.

With wagging tails, happy feathers, full bellies, and one very content ghost,

Lucy 🐾

All good things must come to an end—but if you’ve got to wrap up the weekend, today’s a pretty exciting way to do it. Now it’s time to take our collective noses and press them firmly back onto the grindstone of life. Back to work, back to the hustle, back to doing our part to make this spinning rock a better place.

Kiwi and Peanut have decided to go to work with their Mom this morning and are helping Michelle and her office crew today. I don't know how, but they both got their own shirts and insist on being named employees of the month. Such a demanding duo.

Me, I'm still working 10's this week, I actually have been since early May. It's just a normal day for me now, I get there before everyone else and leave after everyone else.

Not much planned this week, just a normal week pretty much for the both of us. I feel with like I need to enjoy it for a couple of weeks before Morgantown gets inundated with an influx of young minds for the next 8 or 9 months. Traffic will be heavy, so I'm going to enjoy the light traffic while I can.

Have yourselves a great day.

Sunday

Here I sit in a quiet household, Kiwi and Peanut are up and playing a competitive game of Centipede on one of the old consols that I have laying around. I told them I was pretty good at it back in the day but they pretty much told me to shut up and wait my turn.

Had a good time at Jax's birthday party yesterday. It was nice to see everyone from that clan all assembled at the same place for something other than a funeral. Jax seemed like he had himself an absolute ball. Pam made a variation of the dessert dirt with golden oreos and it was honestly pretty amazing. I should have taken my camera for the day, but I didn't.

I ordered and now have Lucy's Dog License in hand. It's a lot cheaper for me to order then for Mom to order them. I live outside of the city so it is $3.00, inside the city I think it was like $8.00 so I just went ahead and took care of that. I have them in hand.

Have yoursleves a great day.

Saturday Morning Ramblings

Here I sit in a semi-quiet household, Kiwi and Peanut are having an intense game of Perfection, a board game from the 1970's and I'm going to tell you these two are getting ultra competitive.

I cut grass last week, so I am probably not going to cut it this weekend, I usually like to wait a couple of weeks between cuts weather permitting. I think I need to go and fill my gas cans up, the mower is full but I have a couple of cans that I fill it up with and they are both empty, so that is something I could be doing today as Michelle is grocery shopping.

Today is Jax's 3rd Birthday and Calvin and Jeanetta are going to have a birthday party for him at the community center where Moke and Ang live. That's this afternoon at 2:00 and I'm going to try to make it over for that.

I finally did get a chance to speak to Daniel this week, namely on his birthday. I surprised Mom and him and added her to the conversation and that put a smile on my face.

Have yourselves a great day.

Well, head on down to the Ruby Ampitheatre this evening and see if you are Tuff Enough. The Fabulous Thunderbirds will be here and both Kiwi and Peanut are both excited, they have been playing their music all day long and dancing up a storm. They like the 80's music meant to sound like 50's music.

No plans for the weekend as of press time. I know Jeanetta is going to have a birthday party for Jax tomorrow, so that will most likely be on our agenda over the next couple of days.

You know this summer has just flown by, watch the students start to pile back into Morgantown slowly after this weekend. The upper classmen mainly who live off campus, this is when they start to trickle into town.

Have yoursleves a great day.

This one was an easy one for me, I was in a Facebook group talking about toys of the past and they posted a picture of this bowling game that I used to have, so I found this picture of it and put it under my pwmn comment saying I had one and loved it.

I think that is me, Gary beside me and Trishia Trevillion there with us, it may have been Pam as they were all at Grandma's that Christmas.

Have yourselves a great day.

Lucy's Journal

Lucy's Journal – July 29, 2029

Dear Journal,

What a day! I am writing this entry with very tired paws, a slightly singed tail, and a brand-new appreciation for people who make glass for a living.

This morning started like most summer mornings. Peanut was sleeping in her favorite sunbeam by the window, Kiwi was loudly informing everyone that "BREAKFAST WAS LATE!" (it wasn't), and the Quackers were arguing over whether breadcrumbs are better fresh or slightly stale.

Then, just as I was settling in for my mid-morning nap, there was a knock at the door.

It was Gracie! She had come to visit for the weekend, and not long after her arrival, the temperature in the room dropped about ten degrees.

"The Ghost of Maybelline is here too!" Kiwi announced dramatically.

Sure enough, there was Maybelline, her ghostly tail wagging and glowing faintly in the sunlight. She floated through the wall, which is still showing off if you ask me.

"I've got an idea," Maybelline said in her spooky voice. "Let's go explore the Rails to Trails!"

Now, Journal, if there's one thing our crew enjoys, it's an adventure. So we packed some snacks (mostly for Peanut), some grape Kool-Aid (for Kiwi), and several emergency breadcrumbs for the Quackers, and off we went.

The Rails to Trails was beautiful. Birds were singing, squirrels were plotting something suspicious, and Kiwi spent most of the hike riding on Peanut's back while pretending he was a pirate captain.

"Avast, ye landlubbers!" he yelled. "I seek treasure and sunflower seeds!"

After about an hour of walking, Maybelline suddenly stopped floating.

"It used to be right here," she said.

We all looked around.

"There isn't anything here," Gracie said.

"Exactly," said Maybelline. "This was the old glass factory."

Apparently, many years ago, there had been a bustling glass factory along the trail. Now there was nothing but a few old foundations, some bricks, and history slowly being reclaimed by nature.

We sat quietly for a few minutes imagining what it must have been like—workers tending furnaces, molten glass glowing orange, and whistles blowing at the end of a shift.

Even Peanut got sentimental.

"I wonder how many mice worked here?" she asked.

Before anyone could answer, Kiwi shouted, "FORWARD! TO MORE HISTORY!"

So onward we marched.

About another mile down the trail, we discovered something incredible.

Another glass factory.

Unlike the first one, this one was still standing and, somehow, still operating.

There was a sign out front:

COMMUNITY GLASS BLOWING DAY – ALL ARE WELCOME

"Well," said Gracie, "this seems oddly convenient."

Nobody argued.

The nice humans inside fitted everyone with tiny safety goggles. The Quackers looked particularly distinguished in theirs. Kiwi insisted on wearing his backwards because he said it made him look "cool."

Soon we were gathered around a demonstration table.

The instructor showed us how to gather molten glass and carefully shape it.

Lucy (that's me) made a lopsided glass dog bone.

Peanut somehow made a perfect glass fish and has not stopped bragging about it.

The Quackers teamed up and created what they claimed was a glass duck sculpture, although it looked suspiciously like a potato.

Gracie made a beautiful black-and-white glass flower.

Kiwi attempted to make a sunflower but accidentally created something that looked like a pineapple wearing a hat.

"I call it Modern Art!" he declared.

Then it was Maybelline's turn.

Being a ghost, she had a bit of an advantage. She floated the glass pipe in midair and gently spun it with spectral precision. When she was finished, she had created a beautiful glass heart that glowed softly from within.

Everyone became very quiet.

"That's lovely," I said.

"It reminds me that even when we're gone," Maybelline said with a smile, "we leave little pieces of ourselves behind."

Of course, the emotional moment was immediately ruined when Kiwi tried to blow into his glass pipe too hard and accidentally launched a blob of molten glass into a bucket of sand.

The instructor said it was the first time he'd ever seen anyone create "abstract beach art."

By the time the sun began to set, we were all exhausted. We carried our creations home in little boxes, laughing about our adventure and promising to visit the trail again someday.

As for me, I'm going to sleep with my glass dog bone beside my bed.

And if I know Kiwi, tomorrow he'll be trying to sell his pineapple-hat sculpture for three sunflower seeds and a cracker.

Until next time, dear Journal.

Paws, feathers, beaks, and ghostly woofs,

Lucy

Happy Birthday Josh Nicholson

I would like to take this opportunity to wish my great-nephew a very Happy Birthday today.

Seems like it was only yesterday that he entered into this world. If my math is correct, this would make this fine young man 20 years old today.
Josh is getting ready to start his third year at WVU (where I am so happy he is going as it is my Alma Mater) and has a very bright future in front of him. It's a journey, this is just year 3.

Not sure if Val has anything planned for this fine young man today, but knowing he is hitting that age just makes me feel a little bit more 21er.

If you happen to see Josh today, take a little bit of time out to wish him a Happy Birthday. Happy Birthday Josh.
