Final 4

Man what a day yesterday was. It started out with us taking Hayley to the airport, we she has arrived safely in Alabama, and turned out to be a trip to the Grove City Outlets.

That wasn't the big news of the day. The big news came with WVU playing a basketball team against a team I had picked to win it all. A team with 4 projected Lottery Picks in this years upcoming NBA draft, three of them are Freshmen, including everyone's top pick John Wall. Had we been beaten by this team of future Millionaires that includes possibly a couple more NBA players also on the roster, I don't think anyone would have been too surprised.

However this Mountaineer basketball team is different that any team I have seen before them. They have been in the top 10 all year, but when selection Sunday came and they bids were announced and we were not given a #1 seed, you could just tell by the looks on their faces they were not happy. They had earned it, yet they were denied that seed. To make matters worse, they put us in a bracket that with a team that I had winning it all which was Kentucky.

I guess there is a reason I am a Geographer and not a sports analyst. West Virginia playing without Truck Bryant our starting Point Guard, re-introduced the nation to Joe Mazulla and brought him center stage.

The Mountaineers beat East Region #1 seed Kentucky 73-66 to claim the East Regional Championship and advance to the Final 4 for the first time since 1959 when Jerry West led us to the Championship game.

Next up for the Mountaineers, the winner of todays South Region game between #1 seed Duke and #3 seed Baylor. Anyone remember the last time WVU and Duke played? We will play the Final 4 Semi-Finals next Saturday evening. Rumor has it Truck Bryant, who had a season ending injury, has a screw in his foot and just may be ready to go.

After the game Michelle and I drove around down town a couple of times, blowing the car horn and yelping it up. I would have loved to have met the team on its return, if they came back today, but they have already returned early this morning to a crowd of people waiting at the Coliseum. I would have loved to have been there, but it was a long day.

Word has it the team will leave for Indianapolis Wed.

Four down, two go.
