Wednesday Wisdom

I thought I would do a little something different today. It's been a while since I've done a Wisdom post so today is a great time to do it.

I found out yesterday that the Department of Energy is taking a 56% Budget cut, you can save a lot of money on auto expenses if you just don't put gas in your car, or at least that must be the shallow thought process that is being exhibited here.

I try to avoid politics on this board so other than that I will stop with that since it not only affects me but probably a great number of my co-workers as well.

I found a great high quality movie torrent site yesterday. Yifytorrent.xyz is up and running and has a number of high quality movies available for download. Many very up to date movies including a few that have been released this year. I would say they are all blue ray quality rather than someone in some foreign country holding a camera up to a movie screen. A great way to build up a digital library especially if you have a home media server.

* Where the Senior Center is on High St, used to be Montgomery Ward. It was 3 stories. If you look up at the building you will still see the big "W"

The price eventually went up, in anticipation of the liquor license, which never went through, and the joint went out of business. Next it was the Alamo, some of the most expensive burritos I've ever seen.

* Remember the Morgan Theatre, it stood up from what is now the Boston Beanery, right at the alley. It became a hot dog place and beside it was a clothing store. I think the clothing store moved across the street. Where the hot dog stand was is now a bar.
* How about Pike's Rest. near the corner of High Street, later on the House of Cards and now a lawyer's office.
* Mom and pop grocery stores: Chester Hartley's store on the corner of Grand Street and Gordon Street in South Park (briefly became Dairy Mart, before moving to its present location on Dorsey Avenue); Bobette's store on the corner of Wilson Avenue and Kingwood Street (later located in the building behind its first location); Marvin Luckini's store on Kingwood Street (I hope I spelled Marvin's last name right); Forlini's store on White Avenue; Bailey's grocery on the corner of Arch and Green Streets; Cobun Avenue Confectionery on the corner of Cobun and Maryland (Connie Negri still has her business, but it's on Pleasant Street now); the one on Barrickman Street in First Ward which later became (and may still be) Roto Rooter; and many others across Morgantown that I don't remember because they weren't on the south side (where I obviously grew up).
* The five-and-ten's: Woolworth's on High and Wall Streets--I especially remember their record section in the basement; Murphy's, across from the court house, where the Dollar Store is now--you went through the front door, down the stairs, and the toys were on the right, pets on the left--and at Christmas time, Santa came there so you could sit on his lap and tell him what you wanted; and the ultimate five-and-ten, McCrory's on the corner of High and Walnut--so huge that a multitude of businesses now occupy its space (BW3, Z Club, the state treasurer's office, etc.)--McCrory's had great old wooden floors, a great restaurant at the back, and the ladies' underwear was segregated into a separate room where little boys weren't allowed to go so they wouldn't get any bad ideas.
* Downtown restaurants: Remember when the Acropolis was a restaurant and not a coin shop? (It was where the Discount Den now is.); Remember when {where BB&T Bank is} was the BBF before it was Borden Burger before it was Burger Chef? (and before that, it was a Chinese laundry and Olan Mills photography studio.); Bonanza steak house on the corner of High & Fayette (later Hardee's, & later still Cafe of India's old location); the Indian restaurant that was in the back of Cafe of India's old location before it became Cafe of India; Cosmopolitan hot dogs; Healthy Bites (now the Blue Moose); Hav-a-Lunch on the corner of High & Pleasant, where the Huntington Bank drive-through now is.
* The bench on the corner of High and Kirk Streets, which had "Southside Lumber" painted on it--used to be the only bench in all of downtown Morgantown, but I never saw anyone ever sitting on it.
* The pet store on West Street in Westover (at the far end from Holland Avenue).
* The bakery on Walnut Street (now a lawyer's office), next to D&A Jewler's (now the porn store).
* The house on Wall Street with the great balcony and the barber shop on the first floor, which was torn down to become Morgan's parking lot. The barber's wife was a painter, and her paintings were always stacked up so the barber couldn't use one of his chairs. The barber shop moved to the location which is now the Blue Moose's new dining room extension.
* Grocery stores on High Street! (High Street Market & Morgantown Market)--one was on the corner of High and Forest, recently torn down--the other was where Subway is now.
* The Blue Tic Tavern in the Mountainlair!
* The Double Decker bar on Walnut Street (now the Living Room), and another bar down the street, the Washington Cafe (now GARO).
* The miniature golf course on the Greenbag Road, where Bluegrass Village is now.
* Downtown newstands: Walter's News, on the corner of High & Pleasant, and before that in the middle of the block of Pleasant Street between High & Spruce; and Stenger's, where Casa d'Amici is now.
* John Marshall Records, at its many locations up and down High Street, and even on Willey Street at one point; Record Bar in the Mountaineer Mall; and Disc Jockey in the Morgantown Mall.
* The Euphorium, upstairs in Sunnyside--Morgantown's very first head shop, I believe. Speaking of head shops, where Cool Ridge is now used to be the Morgan Theater.
* The stadium bridge--no wonder I don't walk to Sunnyside anymore!
* Morgantown's first pizza delivery place, Phantom Pizza. Its location was supposed to be a secret, but it was on Beechurst.
* Morgantown's first Kentucky Fried Chicken was in a small building on Patteson Drive which today would be located in the plaza on Patteson Drive.
*The "Today's Buffet" Chinese restaurant next door used to be another Bonanza steak house.
* Morgantown used to have good Chinese restaurants! The Great Wall (not affiliated with the current Great Wall) was where Fatty Loaf's is on Walnut Street; East Garden is now that tea house above Zen Clay; and Foosheen used to be called Hallelujah Chinese Restaurant and used to be good despite the fact that they were serving up cat meat.
* Independent book stores! Who can forget Stilwell's on the corner of Pleasant and Chestnut Streets? (Before it was Stilwell's, it was a bar called El Toro.)--Not to mention the cafe in back of Stilwell's. I remember it first as an oriental grocery store, then Cafe Libretto, then Cafe Catherine, then Grasshopper Locomotive--and now a parking lot. How about the book store on Foundry Street, next to the South High Street Brigde? First it was Wolf's Head, then Abshire's, and finally Books Books Books. Remember Trans-Atlantic Books on Fayette Street? Or how about Riverrun in the Garlow Building above where Kinko's used to be? (and remember when Kinko's was on Willey Street?)--well, some good news, Riverrun is back, now in the Sand Castle on Walnut Street across from the police station/parking garage.

* Space Port, where you would waste all of your spare quarters on video games.
* Yanns on Brockway Avenue, yes we had one of Fairmont's finest here in Morgantown.

Wednesday Wisdom

Well I have not done one of these for a while, and I'm suffering from that ever so often midweek brainfart, so I thought I would try to do another Wisdom post but change it up a little from the ones I used to do. That is my topic for the day, now comes the formidable task of finding a bit of wisdom to share with everyone.

Something that we are dealing with right now where I live is our 17 year cycle of the Cicadas that have taken over and dominated the silence with their mating calls. It seems like anywhere you drive they are around and making their call for a mate. They are harmless to humans and will only be here for a short period of time before they lay their eggs and disappear until 2033.

I have discussed this before here, but has anyone ever made butter at home? A simple little task if you have a good kitchen aid mixer. All you need is some Heavy Whipping Cream and a little bit of time. A cheesecloth can also be used to help you drain out of the excessive water out once the product is completed. It's no big task, but it is a nice little trick that will make you feel a little better about yourself.

Hump Day

Well that is two days down, we have a couple more ahead of us now all we have to do is get up and over this dreaded noon time hump and it will be all downhill as we work towards another fun filled weekend for all of us to enjoy.

Being that this is once again Wednesday and it's hard to come up with content on a Wednesday, maybe I should do a partial wisdom or personal development blog.

Coursera is an online training site that I have mentioned here previously. There are a number of professional categories to choose from as well as personal development classes a user can choose to take. It is never a bad thing to sharpen up skill sets that you don't use all the time or just to simply learn a new skill set. Many of these courses are timed, graded and taught for free of charge by established University Professors.

Looking to see what traffic is like around Morgantown, West Virginia 511 is the site you will want to use. They even offer live cameras in some locations so you can look and see how messed up traffic is at times in our quaint little town.

Looking to find out what is going on around town with incidents, Safetown is an Ap Michelle likes to use when we hear sirens around us to see what is going on and where they are running off to.

Wednesday Wisdom

Well it has been a while since I have done a wisdom post, so I thought this would be a good time to do it. I just needed a theme and came across the idea earlier this week when I was searching Youtube. My Grandfather Ellis Hall recorded for RCA Victor years ago and made a few records. For more on his life, follow this link. The picture at the font of this article of my Grandfather, Bill Addis and Steve Sholes, hangs in my home to this day. Either the wiki site or the posted article misspelled his name, but this is the same Steve Sholes. It was written by Uncle Chuck Wolfe from Moundsville and Carl Fleischhauer back in the late 1970's.

I can even remember as a kid seeing some correspondence letters between my Grandfather and Chet Atkins. I wish I would have known then what I know now, I would have made sure that they were preserved. I do remember the day that Grandpa Hall cleaned out his desk where all of these letters and music were stored and he through them in the trash. I had a notion of grabbing them and hiding them from him instead of letting them become rubbish, but hind site is always 20/20.

Hump Day

Well there is two work days down this week, we have two ahead of us not including this one, so it must be get over the hump day.

One again in the middle of the week I struggle for content (I've been doing that a whole lot lately), so I thought I would do a normal blog and a wisdom all combined into one.

One thing that I truly believe is one thing that we should never stop doing is learning. Always seeking a new skill or just sharpening up a new hobby.

One site that I have always used is called Coursera, a very good site for enhancing what ever you want to enhance whether it be something Geospatial like my field, Project Management, Marketing , Logic or even Photography. Some of the courses are free and some have a small fee, but they are all taught by professionals in the industry or Professors at some specified college (consider it free college education in some cases).

It never hurts to broaden your base of knowledge, this is just one of the sites that I like to use. Does anyone else have any that they like?

Wednesday Wisdom

Wisdom comes in many forms, some times it's just little cute sayings that get our attention, sometimes it's a picture that makes us think and look at things a little differently. Sometimes it's the obvious that we just don't see and sometimes it's just a little look. Wisdom is all around us, we just have to be perceptive and pay attention to our environment so that we can grow as people.

Since last weeks debut of Wednesday Wisdom seemed to be so popular, I thought I would give it a second go around this week. Last week was wisdom quotes, but I'm not going to say that that will always be the format as wisdom comes in so many forms, but I'll repeat last weeks format this week.

Wednesday Wisdom

A few weeks ago I asked my readers what I could do for a theme on a Wednesday, the day of the week I find it most difficult to come up with some content for. It's the middle of the work week and I just did a tidbits, so I needed something else.

My wonderful wife came up with this great idea, so I'm going to do this Wednesday Wisdom on days I have brain farts on actual content and am looking for something to write about because let's be honest, my life is not that exciting where I have new content every day. Not sure where I am going to go with this, or if it will be an every Wednesday thing or just something to fill in when I have creative brain farts.
